Deputy Head of Employee Relations

Deputy Head of Employee Relations – People & Organisational Development

About the Role

In this key leadership role, we are seeking an experienced and motivated Employee Relations professional to join our People & Organisational Development team at South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust.

You will provide support to the Head of Employee Relations, deliver a values-driven Employee Relations (ER) service, and shape our approach to employee relations to ensure consistency, fairness, and alignment with our Just and Learning Culture.

The role involves:

  • Leading complex casework and service delivery
  • Partnering with senior leaders to build manager capability and reduce organisational risk
  • Coaching managers to improve handling of people issues

We are looking for a credible, collaborative, Senior ER leader capable of operating at a high level within a clinical governance context.


Key Responsibilities

  • Strategic Leadership & Service Development
    • Provide visible leadership to the Employee Relations team, driving continuous improvement and high performance standards
    • Design and oversee an employee relations casework service, from advice through to investigations, hearings, and tribunals
    • Play a proactive role in shaping an ER service that is data-informed and solution-focused
    • Coach and train managers to confidently handle people issues

  • Stakeholder Engagement & Decision-Making

    • Work closely with P&OD Business Partners, senior leaders, and Trade Union representatives
    • Analyse ER trends and convert insights into service improvements and Board-level reporting
    • Support policy development and reviews ensuring legal compliance and NHS best practice adherence
  • Governance, Risk, and Performance

    • Advise on ER governance and risk management processes
    • Directly line manage Senior Employee Relations Advisors
    • Deputise for the Head of Employee Relations when required

The Deputy Head of Employee Relations holds broad service delivery responsibility under corporate budgets, reporting on performance and quality benchmarks. You will also drive the evolution of performance management systems across the Trust, ensuring alignment with NHS frameworks and mentorship from broader directives.


Your Contribution

  • You’ll lead the sustained evolution of performance management systems
  • Work collaboratively with other ER, ODE, and Directorates to maintain service excellence
  • Support the Trust’s underlying ethos of mental health and wellbeing across all operations
