About This Role
Deputy Headteacher & SENDCo (Secondment – up to 12 months, beginning October half term)
Purpose of the Role
The Deputy Headteacher & SENDCo will work closely with the Headteacher to provide strategic leadership, drive school improvement, and ensure excellent outcomes for all pupils. The postholder will lead whole-school inclusion, fulfil the role of SENDCo, and uphold the Christian vision and values of Southam St James and the Diocese of Coventry Multi Academy Trust.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership and School Improvement
- Support the Headteacher in leading the strategic development and day-to-day management of the school in line with the Academy Improvement Plan.
- Promote and model the school’s Christian vision, values and high expectations for all members of the school community.
- Lead, monitor and evaluate teaching, learning, behaviour and pupil outcomes across the school.
- Use assessment and performance data to identify strengths, address areas for development and secure continuous improvement.
- Lead staff professional development, coaching and mentoring to improve classroom practice and outcomes.
- Assume responsibility for the leadership of the school in the absence of the Headteacher.
- Contribute to curriculum development, school self-evaluation and improvement planning.

Inclusion and SEND Leadership (SENDCo)
- Lead and manage the school’s SEND provision, ensuring compliance with the SEND Code of Practice and statutory requirements.
- Identify, monitor and support pupils with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities, ensuring appropriate provision is in place.
- Develop, implement and review SEND support plans, Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs), and targeted interventions.
- Work collaboratively with teachers, teaching assistants, parents, external agencies and other professionals to secure the best outcomes for pupils with SEND.
- Monitor the progress and attainment of vulnerable groups and ensure barriers to learning are identified and addressed.
- Lead staff training and development in inclusive practice and adaptive teaching.
- Manage SEND documentation, funding and reporting requirements, ensuring accurate records are maintained.
- Promote a culture of inclusion where every child is supported to achieve academically, socially and emotionally.
Safeguarding and Community
- Support the Headteacher in maintaining a strong safeguarding culture throughout the school.
- Build positive relationships with pupils, families, governors, the wider MAT and external agencies.
- Work collaboratively with colleagues across the Diocese of Coventry Multi Academy Trust to share best practice and strengthen provision.

Accountability
- The postholder is accountable to the Headteacher and will be a key member of the Senior Leadership Team.
- They will contribute significantly to the educational success, inclusion agenda and strategic development of the school while ensuring all pupils are able to thrive and achieve their full potential.
