The post holder will support the Nursery Manager in the daily running and administration of the nursery, adhering to The City of Liverpool College policies and procedures, ensuring compliance with all relevant legislation and guidance including, the Childcare Act 2006, Working Together 2026, Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework, Prevent Duty, Keeping Children Safe in Education (KCSIE), Ofsted regulations, Health and Safety, GDPR compliance, Food Standards Agency, and Local Authority requirements.

The College’s on-site nursery offers high-quality childcare primarily for students’ children, with a limited number of places available for staff. This Deputy Manager role was established to ensure compliance with statutory requirements, including the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS, 2024), which requires a suitably qualified and capable deputy to take charge in the manager’s absence.

The Deputy Manager plays a key role in supporting the Nursery Manager in all aspects of the nursery’s operation. The post holder will also take on the responsibilities of Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator (SENCo). Working within required staff-to-child ratios, the Deputy Manager provides professional leadership and guidance to the nursery team, ensuring the delivery of high-quality care and education for all children and their families.

This role is integral to the day-to-day running of the nursery, supporting the Nursery Manager in maintaining a safe, nurturing, and inclusive environment. The post holder will hold safeguarding responsibilities, responding promptly and appropriately to any safeguarding or child protection concerns in line with established policies and procedures.

Key Responsibilities

Ensure the required standards and conditions of registration are adhered to at all times. To lead the nursery team in the delivery of flexible and innovative, high-quality childcare tailored to meet the needs of our learners. To actively participate in the construction and delivery of a fully inclusive, integrated curriculum adhering to the principles of the EYFS through effective staff management and deployment. Partake in supervision arrangements and support the NM in staff meetings, discussions and observations of practice. Lead on room meetings, ensuring accurate records of such meetings are kept. To support the NM in reviewing policies and procedures in line with changes in legislation/government guidance/setting developments and Local Authority strategies. Ensure all nursery records/documentation is up to date, completed accurately and stored appropriately in line with Data Protection and GDPR requirements. Work in partnership with the NM regarding claims for early years entitlement hours (for 2, 3 and 4-year-old children) and the childcare expansion for working parents. Liaise with the NM in the purchasing of consumables for the nursery and ensure adequate supplies are maintained. When required, take responsibility for petty cash and the process of goods received protocols (GRN) for nursery purchases, in compliance with finance regulations. Work with the Childcare Manager and Nursery Manager to ensure optimum occupancy levels though allocation of nursery places, accurate completion and monitoring of children’s registers and checking students attendance . Supervisory involvement in any Ofsted inspection. Act as a positive role model to children, staff and students. Behaving in accordance with the City of Liverpool College staff code of conduct at all times. Adhering to all policies, procedure and protocols to ensure the health and safety, security and welfare of children, staff, students and visitors.

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise

Essential Criteria Qualified to Level 3 in Early Years Childcare/education or equivalent Minimum of 3 years’ experience in an Early Years setting Knowledge and understanding of child development, key legislative framework, The Early Years Foundation Stage, safeguarding and child protection practices Good organisational skills and effective time management to ensure delegated tasks are completed and deadlines met Effective communication and team working skills required to lead and support nursery staff to ensure quality is maintained Ability to work under own initiative To assist in the supervision of staff and monitoring and evaluating the quality of teaching and learning Actively participate in the ongoing development of the nursery by contributing to action plans, audits, moderation processes and quality assurance tools Personal qualities of integrity, honesty, transparency and commitment to/ownership of the mission & values of the College. Positive personality - self-motivated, passionate & driven to achieve the best outcome for students Review own professional development needs and to participate fully in future training and development Willingness & ability to embrace new systems to maximise the use of technology within the nursery. Willingness & ability to contribute to the development of the college nursery
