As a result, alongside several consortium partners; Balfour Beatty have been selected by bp (British Petroleum) to construct a first-of-a-kind fully integrated gas-fired power station with carbon capture and storage which is a key driving force behind plans to make Teesside the UK’s first decarbonised industrial cluster.

Balfour Beatty is seeking a dynamic Deputy Preservation Lead to contribute to our Net Zero Teesside (NZT) project based at our site in Redcar and Cleveland.

Role Purpose

The Deputy Preservation Electrical Lead is responsible for developing, executing, and governing the preservation strategy for all electrical equipment, systems, and materials across the project. This role ensures that plant assets remain in optimal condition from delivery through installation, commissioning, operation, and any periods of storage or layup.

What you'll be doing

Preservation Planning & Strategy

  • Support the development and maintenance of the site Preservation Plan, with a focus on Electrical & Instrumentation (E&I) equipment
  • Review OEM manuals, EPC specifications, and project requirements to define preservation methods, frequencies, and controls
  • Develop procedures for storage, commissioning delays, and equipment layup
  • Align preservation activities with construction and commissioning schedules

Execution & Coordination

  • Coordinate and oversee E&I preservation activities across the site
  • Manage contractors carrying out preservation work, ensuring compliance with approved procedures and safety requirements
  • Ensure preservation of critical equipment including turbines, generators, electrical systems, HRSGs, and balance-of-plant assets
  • Work closely with construction and commissioning teams to ensure activities are completed as planned

Monitoring, Inspection & Documentation

  • Maintain preservation records, inspection reports, and checklists
  • Carry out routine inspections to identify risks such as corrosion, contamination, and moisture ingress
  • Monitor preservation performance and ensure compliance with project and OEM requirements
  • Prepare regular reports to support audits and system handover

Technical Governance

  • Act as the site SME for preservation activities and best practices
  • Review and approve preservation procedures, method statements, and risk assessments
  • Liaise with OEMs to resolve technical issues and deviations
  • Provide technical support and training to site personnel

Risk Management & Quality Assurance

  • Identify preservation risks and implement mitigation measures to protect equipment and warranties
  • Lead investigations into preservation failures and implement corrective actions
  • Ensure compliance with site procedures, industry standards, and safety requirements

Materials & Storage Management

  • Oversee storage of spare parts, consumables, and long-lead items
  • Ensure environmental controls such as temperature, humidity, and cleanliness are maintained
  • Manage preservation materials including desiccants, oils, nitrogen, and protective products

Handover & Lifecycle Support

  • Prepare preservation documentation for turnover to commissioning and operations teams
  • Support the transition from construction preservation to operational maintenance requirements
  • Provide guidance on future outage, storage, and layup preservation activities

Who we're looking for

Essential

  • Electrical background preferably in heavy engineering, power and O & G industry
  • NVQ Level 3/City Guilds in Electrical Engineering
  • CCNSG Safety passport
  • Significant experience in power generation, ideally within CCGT or large industrial plants
  • Strong understanding of OEM preservation requirements for rotating equipment, HRSGs, electrical systems, and balance-of-plant
  • Proven experience managing preservation programs during construction, commissioning, or major outages
  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings, P&IDs, and technical manuals

Desirable

  • Experience working with EPC contractors and OEMs on large-scale energy projects
  • SMSTS or equivalent
  • IOSH Managing Safely
  • CompEx (desirable for hazardous areas)
  • 18th Edition Wiring Regulations (BS 7671)
  • Knowledge of corrosion control, asset integrity management, and condition monitoring
  • Familiarity with CMMS systems and digital preservation tracking tools
  • Leadership experience in a multi-disciplinary environment
