Deputy Project Director – Onshore Capital Delivery (Beauly - Peterhead Project), SSEN Transmission
Base Location & Contract This permanent, full-time position requires applicants to be based from one of our Scottish locations (Inverness, Perth, Aberdeen, or Glasgow), with a requirement to spend 50% of the working week in-office.
Salary & Package £78,400 – £117,600 per annum (dependent on skills and experience), plus:

About the Role
SSEN Transmission has an exciting opportunity for a Deputy Project Director to join their Onshore Capital Delivery team, focused on delivering the £1.2bn Beauly–Peterhead transmission project**—**one of the largest onshore transmission schemes within SSEN Transmission’s Accelerated Strategic Transmission Investments (ASTI) portfolio. This major investment includes:
- Constructing new overhead line infrastructure
- Installing underground cable systems
- Developing substation upgrades
As a critical member of the Onshore Delivery team, you will:
- Report directly to the Project Director
- Provide executive-level support in all aspects of project delivery
- Lead teams across safety, quality, commercial and programme governance to ensure safe, efficient, timely, and high-quality execution
- Oversee monitoring, controlling, and escalation processes
Your Responsibilities
Project Delivery Leadership
- Support the Project Director in safely and successfully delivering complex onshore transmission projects, with sole responsibility for overhead lines portfolio delivery.
- Recommend and implement programme improvements to optimise cost, schedule and delivery efficiency.
Regulatory & Compliance
- Assist with Ofgem regulatory submissions, sanctioning and final credit decisions within the SSEN Transmission Large Capital Project Governance Framework Gating Process.
Stakeholder Engagement
- Build strong working relationships with internal (senior management, planners, finance, HSE) and external stakeholders (supply chain, regulators, infrastructure agencies).
- Shape project governance, commercial, quality and risk strategies to support high-performing delivery.

Strategic Programme & Project Management
- Support the development and delivery of a multi-project portfolio, adapting strategies across varying stages of definition.
- Drive pull-through of ROI across the portfolio through robust commercial and procurement engagement.

Essential Requirements
Project Experience & Expertise
- Extensive senior experience (minimum 5+ years) in overhead line project delivery, with a proven track record as a project manager or director.
- Direct experience leading high-risk, multi-disciplinary programmes within transmission or grid infrastructure sectors.
- Portfolio-level oversight of overhead line installations (traditional manufacture and installation; beam and portal towers; CCM/EMP installation for DEC, PSC etc.).
- Contractual authority and oversight of NEC3 contracts type hire, incentive, target/completion (with structured cost and risk-sharing models).
Technical & Governance Knowledge
- Deep knowledge of resource and supply chain optimisation in high-volume overhead line construction.
- Advanced familiarity with SSEN Transmission project management methods, including reporting, change control and risk management.
- Understanding of transmission technology innovations and safety/critical infrastructure requirements.
Soft Skills & Communication
- Strong analytical and strategic thinking with the ability to anticipate challenges and make under pressure.
- Exceptional stakeholder influence across senior leadership and technical teams.
- Excellent oral and written communication, with a focus on clear and persuasive messaging.
