Substantive and Secondment Opportunity in Cardiology/HSU (Heart Surgery Unit)
Currently, the ward comprises 53 commissioned beds, including a 6-bed Coronary Care Unit (CCU). In this role, you’ll provide intensive nursing care to acutely unwell patients, including those who have:
- Recently experienced myocardial infarction (heart attack)
- Require interventions such as:
- Intra-Aortic Balloon Pump (IABP)
- Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP)
Clinical Context and Skills Required
- Varying patient dependency – Our unit handles direct transfers from regional general hospitals and emergency admissions, demanding specialised clinical skills and adaptability.
- Rapidly evolving, high-tech environment offering diverse experiences, including:
- Angiograms
- Angioplasties (with a focus on Primary Percutaneous Coronary Intervention – PCI)
- Ablations
- Cardiac device implants
- Cardiac valve procedures

Key Responsibilities
- Lead and manage nursing care, ensuring delivery of safe, effective, and compassionate patient care.
- Conduct assessments to determine patient needs and develop, implement, and evaluate individualised care plans.
- Uphold high clinical standards across ward operations.
- Act as ward/department lead, deputising for the ward manager on a day-to-day basis.
- Oversee staff supervision and mentorship, including clinical teaching for experienced nurses and students.
