Deputy SSD Manager (Resources)

Job Description

Role Overview

The Sterile Services department (SSD) provides essential services of reprocessing surgical instruments and Endoscopes for use in wards and departments within the trust and outside practices.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support the operational management of the SSD, EDU and QI decontamination units to ensure provision of a high quality, comprehensive and responsive decontamination service to all users.
  • Take particular responsibility for management of production, resource and staffing issues as detailed on the job description.
  • Work flexibly and in partnership with the Deputy SSD Manager (Quality), providing cross-cover as required, and deputise for the Sterile Services Manager in his/her absence.
  • Act as a role model to others in all aspects of their work and consistently demonstrate NNUH’s ‘PRIDE’ values of People focused, Respect, Dedication, Integrity and Excellence.

Specific Duties

  • Assist in the recruitment of new starters, with responsibility for ensuring and recording adequate induction, training and support.
  • Provide ongoing technical and professional training and development to decontamination staff.
  • Monitor, motivate and support staff to ensure all mandatory training needs are fulfilled.
  • Ensure compliance with all mandatory technical decontamination standards (e.g. HTM 01-01, HTM 01-06).
  • Manage and maintain the staffing and physical resources of the SSD/EDU and QI units to ensure adequate provision of service.
  • Facilitate authorisation of recruitment and maintain vacancy records.
  • Manage the effective allocation and rostering of staff across the decontamination units.
  • Prepare for, and assist with, annual External Audits and Unannounced Visits.
  • Be responsible for corrective and preventative actions, ensuring that all incidents are investigated and closed out within the prescribed timescales.
  • Ensure changes and developments are adequately communicated to decontamination staff and user departments.
  • Assist in business planning and service development.
  • Assist in providing effective management information using a range of IT and other systems (including tracking and traceability systems).
  • Carry out staff PDPs for Band 4 decontamination staff and assist in the management of staff attendance, disciplinary and grievance issues in accordance with Trust policies.
  • Provide specialist decontamination advice to the Trust as required.
