Deputy Training Safety Officer – Live Firing Facilities

Location: Burngate, South West England, BH20 5QF Hours: 37 hours per week

About the Role

As a Deputy Training Safety Officer (DTSO), you will play a critical role in ensuring the safety, compliance, and readiness of high-impact military training facilities. Key responsibilities include:

  • Safeguarding Live Firing Marksmanship Training (LFMT)
  • Managing Live Firing Gunnery Training (LFGT)
  • Overseeing Live Firing Tactical Training (LFTT)
  • Protecting Fieldcraft Training Areas (FTA)

Your work will directly impact the operational capacity of the UK’s armed forces, ensuring training facilities meet practical safety standards while enabling real-world effectiveness. You will support the Training Safety Officer (TSO) in achieving Practitioner/Expert-level competence within the Defence Ranges Framework (Master Trainers Licence), focusing on:

  • Development and application of safety and operational regulations
  • Infrastructure maintenance and compliance
  • Inspection and risk assessment procedures

Responsibilities

Core Duties

  • Safety Leadership:

    • Support the TSO in ensuring all training facilities are compliant, safe, and ready for use
    • Coordinate Uncrewed Air Systems (UAS) operations (Beyond Visual Line Of Sight (#BVLOS#) and Visual Line Of Sight (#VLOS#))
    • Advise on safe-place training protocols and brief users on compliance procedures
  • Operations & Compliance :

    • Assist in booking, monitoring, and ensuring safe delivery of live firing schedules
    • Manage Third-Party Income Generation (3PIG) applications
    • Act as duty officer to provide on-call support during training operations
  • Maintenance & Infrastructure :

    • Report and track infrastructure defects to maintain range readiness
    • Oversee handover/takeover of range facilities and ensure smooth operations
    • Monitor OME (Occupied Marginal Elevation) and safety distances
  • Documentation & Reporting :

    • Manage risk assessments, Standing Orders, and Daily Safety Summaries
    • Support compliance with all mandatory range inspections
    • Record accidents, near misses, incursions, and security breaches as required
  • Emergency & Environmental Responsibilities:

    • Coordinate with Emergency Services for unscheduled incident drills
    • Track progress of site works and assess contractor compliance
    • Assist in annual conservation meetings and environmental protection initiatives

Person Specification

Experience & Knowledge

  • High-Risk Operations: Proven experience in training safety, military calibration, or high-risk operational environments
  • UAS (Drone) Standards: Familiarity with BVLOS/VLOS protocols and safe operational practices
  • Compliance Management: Ability to apply range regulations, Standing Orders, and military safety protocols
  • Incident Investigation: Skills in reporting, tracking, and mitigation of accidents, near misses, and hazards
  • Infrastructure Awareness: Knowledge of defect identification and maintenance best practices across outdoor facilities
  • Environmental Responsibility: Understanding of wildlife conservation and environmental safeguards

Skills & Abilities

  • Technical Proficiency:

    • Competency in Microsoft 365 tools (#MS Excel#,#MS Word#,#Outlook#,#Teams#, and #Powerpoint#)
  • Communication & Advisory Skills:

    • Ability to deliver briefings, advisories, and safety guidance to diverse user groups, including senior stakeholders and emergency services.
  • Risk Assessment:

    • Skills in Rediscovering and developing risk mitigation strategies across high-risk activities.
  • Compliance Audits:

    • Inspection and compliance monitoring experience.
  • Decision-Making Under Pressure:

    • Duty officer experience prioritising safety decisions dynamically.
  • Stakeholder Coordination:

    • Experience leading collaborative relationships with RAU, emergency responders, and MOD sections.

Licences & Compliance

Licences & Vehicle Access:

  • Full UK driving licence required.
  • Respondents located across a wide operational area necessitating self-driving transport for site travel and safety visits.

Security Vetting:

  • Applicants will undergo criminal record and baseline security checks.
  • Must achieve the Grade s checked status.

Salary & Benefits

  • Salary Level: £30,740 per annum
