Fixed-Term Deputy Ward Leader (Band 7) – Ward 3, Day Surgical Unit
About the Role
An exiting fixed-term opportunity has been created for a Deputy Ward Leader at Ward 3, a fast-paced, surgical day case unit serving Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
Ideal for a forward-thinking, dynamic individual with experience in a surgical environment, particularly in ward coordination or management. The role is full-time and covers Monday to Sunday, requiring a flexible approach to accommodate the demands of the post.
This position is fixed-term, officially covering maternity leave and expected to conclude in 12 months or upon the substantive postholder’s return. While advertised on an acting/secondment basis, there is potential for the role to become permanent in the future.

Ward 3 operates as a high-energy, surgical day case unit, specialising in elective surgeries across a range of specialities, including:
- General Surgery

- Supporting the Ward Leader to maintain and improve clinical pathways, grounded in evidence-based practice
- Driving high standards of care, placing patient needs at the core of all decision-making
- Effectively managing pressure—balancing autonomy with collaboration from both the Ward Leader and Surgical Matron
- Constructive contributing to the ward’s operational excellence, enhancing both clinical and administrative efficiency
Key Requirements
Essential Criteria
- Minimum of 2 years’ current experience as a nurse with proven ward management or coordination experience
- Depth of knowledge in elective surgery environments
- Exceptional communication, interpersonal, and organisational skills
- Commitment to providing high-quality, compassionate patient care
- NHS Employee Contact: Will require pre-approval from your manager for a secondment arrangement (subsequently a condition of any offer)
Ideal Skills & Attributes
- Strong ability to work independently while thriving in a collaborative team setting
- Proven capability in managing challenging situations with emotional resilience
- Understanding of patient advocacy and maintaining compliance with care standards

On-Call Expectations
A note for senior roles (Band 8A and above): Part-time or full-time participation in on-call rotas may be necessary, particularly if the role has a key operational aspect.
