Deputy Ward Manager

Deputy Ward Manager – Adult Registered Nurse (AMU Assessment, Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board)

Job Overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a motivated and enthusiastic Adult Registered Nurse to join our friendly and expanding team on AMU Assessment as Deputy Ward Manager. AMU Assessment is part of the Emergency Quadrant, an area of continuous development.

We are a 27-bedded acute assessment unit, combining Ambulatory Emergency Care (AEC) with specialisation in acute medicine and emergency admissions from both ED (Emergency Department) and GP referrals.

We seek a highly motivated individual who thrives in fast-paced environments and can help shape our vision — delivering compassionate nursing care. This role requires an experienced nurse with proven clinical expertise, leadership, and managerial skills to support our ward manager, step in during their absence, and drive efficient, patient-centred care through adherence to Health Board policies and NMC guidelines.

Key Attributes

The ability to speak Welsh is desirable, but Welsh/English bilingual applicants are equally welcome to apply.


About the Role

This role is ideal for a Registered Nurse who enjoys a challenge and values a collaborative, supportive work environment. You’ll work closely with the Ward Manager but also take full operational responsibility in their absence.

Main Responsibilities:

✅ Support the Ward Manager in day-to-day ward operations and leadership.✅ Promote effective communication and best-practice compliance (e.g. Health Board policies, NMC standards).
✅ Assume ward management duty when the Ward Manager is unavailable.✅ Develop and maintain a mentally healthy working environment for staff.
✅ Ensure operational efficiency and adherence to government guidelines.✅ Uphold equality, diversity, and anti-discrimination principles throughout care delivery.

Responsibilities

Clinical

  • Provide expert nursing care in a fast-moving, multi-disciplinary team environment.
  • Advise and support junior staff on clinical best practice, fostering their development.
  • Serve as an advocate for patient-centred care in accordance with legal and ethical standards.

Leadership & Management

  • Supervise and delegate effectively to ensure seamless ward operations.
  • Identify development opportunities for colleagues, embedding a culture of continuous learning.
  • Lead in incident debriefs and root cause analysis, ensuring robust learning from clinical incidents.
  • Represent the ward in cross-departmental forums and integrated care initiatives.

Quality & Safety

  • Ensure compliance with mandatory NMC leadership standards, reflecting imperial and Welsh health regulations.
  • Drive audit and governance towards optimal clinical practice and audit results.
  • Champion initiatives that enhance team cohesion and staff wellbeing.
