Our client is a leading bank (corporate and institutional banking) in Europe with an international reach. This bank has produced enviable results and consistent growth over the past several years, despite challenging times for other banks, and looks set to build on this success further.

A core part of the bank’s activities is the derivatives and clearing business, which sits within the wider Prime Services and Securities Lending team. A new role for a lawyer in this team has arisen, and the successful candidate will occupy an integral role across OTC and exchange-traded clearing transactions primarily, encompassing some of the following responsibilities:

  • Drafting and negotiating clearing agreements under FIA terms of business
  • Providing documentation pertaining to associated collateral structures
  • Advising on the interpretation and implementation of new regulatory initiatives
  • Providing advice and assistance to more junior members of the team when required

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

You will form part of a highly regarded legal team that the business looks to for commercially minded solutions, not just technical advice, so you must be a lawyer with sound commercial acumen and be adept at relaying your advice to non-lawyers. As such, you will likely hail from a relevant in-house legal team or be in private practice with in-house experience from a secondment.

Arbuthnot Yon has a long-standing relationship with this client, and it’s notable that over the years, this legal team has a very impressive retention rate of lawyers, stemming not only from a stimulating diet of work, but an inclusive, respectful and collaborative working culture, strong relationships with stakeholders, healthy work-life balance and a generous/flexible allowance to work from home on a weekly basis.
