Design Engineer
Design Engineer – Temporary Works Centre of Expertise
BAM UK & Ireland
About the Role
We are seeking a Design Engineer to join the BAM UK & Ireland Temporary Works Centre of Expertise, a team dedicated to providing design and technical support across all BAM UK & Ireland projects. This spans a broad range of engineering applications, including: 🔹 Earthworks 🔹 Earth-retaining structures 🔹 Foundations 🔹 Structural steelwork 🔹 Reinforced concrete 🔹 Timber 🔹 Formwork/falsework

Your Team & Working Arrangement
- This role can be based at our Leeds, Solihull, or Kilsyth (Scotland) office.
- A hybrid working schedule will be implemented.
Your Responsibilities
Core Duties
- Liaise with project teams to define design requirements and solutions.
- Represent the Centre of Expertise at internal and external meetings when required.
- Act as Project Design Lead for specific tenders or projects.
- Develop conceptual designs ensuring safe, practical, and economical solutions while complying with current standards.
- Produce detailed designs, including calculations, risk assessments, and design sketches for 3D modelling and working drawings.
- Review and approve design work of team members and external designers.
- Ensure compliance with division-specific procedures and maintain a high standard of professionalism.
- Supervise junior members and maintain accountability for task completion.
- Conduct site visits as needed to assess temporary works on-site.
- Maintain up-to-date workflow management systems for all design tasks.
- Collect and save design feedback for future improvements.
- Identify process optimisation opportunities within the department.
- Mentor and coach other team members.
- Contribute to broader operational duties as required.

What We Look for in You
Mandatory Requirements
✅ Experience in civil/structural engineering design for common BAM UK & Ireland structures, including:
- Earthworks
- Earth-retaining structures
- Foundations
- Structural steelwork
- Reinforced concrete
- Timber
- Formwork/falsework
✅ Proficiency in civil/structural engineering software and draughting packages (e.g., Autodesk Revit, MSC Adv cookies, CRS Multibrief).
✅ Familiarity with construction methods and processes.
✅ Degree (BEng, MEng, or equivalent) in Civil Engineering or a related subject.

✅ Membership of ICE (Institution of Civil Engineers) and/or IStructE (Institution of Structural Engineers), with progression toward Chartered Engineer (CEng) status.
Desirable Requirements
🔹 Construction site experience. 🔹 Knowledge of modern methods of construction (e.g., DfMA – Digital Factory Manufacturing Architecture). 🔹 Experience with digital construction processes.
