Location: Peterborough, UK (on-site, 5 days a week) Salary: £49,519 – £74,278 Flexible working arrangements: Considered based on business needs.

Job Summary
We’re seeking a Design Engineer to join the UK Rapid Electrification Development (RED) team, part of E&ES. This team specialises in designing, prototyping, and validating technical and commercial demonstrator machines—solving real customer challenges with innovative electrified solutions.
As part of an empowered task-force "team of teams", you will collaborate closely with customers, cross-functional build teams, and validation specialists to rapidly develop and refine low-volume, pre-production electrified machines. Expect hands-on work across concept development, system integration, and prototype testing to accelerate advancements in electrification technology.
Key Responsibilities:
- Contribute to electrified machine design—from concept development and detailed design to prototype build and validation.
- Work in cross-functional agile teams to address customer challenges and deliver cutting-edge solutions.
- Support mechanical and/or electrical subsystems, including system integration, packaging, and component development.
- Create, maintain, and update engineering models, technical documentation, and design deliverables.
- Use structured problem-solving (e.g., diagnosing failures and implementing fixes).
- Participate in design reviews, validation testing, and engineering change implementations.

About the Role
This role offers exposure to a diverse range of engineering challenges, technologies, and machine applications, immersing you in hands-on prototype development and pre-production activities. Assisting build teams and collaborating with experimental facilities will ensure you gain direct experience with real-world system development.
Some travel may be required to support project engagements or customer visits.
Requirements
Must-Have:
- Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related field (or equivalent industry experience).
- Experience in product design and development, including concept and detailed design activities.
- Proficiency in engineering design tools (e.g., Creo or equivalent CAD software) and drawing methods.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to multitask across multiple projects.
- Strong communicative and collaborative attributes; work competently within multidisciplinary teams.
Nice-to-Have (Preferred):
- Experience with mechanical/electrical systems or both.
- Familiarity with electrified powertrains, machine integration, low/medium/high-voltage systems.
- Background in prototype development, demonstrator programs, or pre-production product deployment.
- Knowledge of engineering processes, including:
- Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA)
- Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T)
- Design for Manufacturability (DFM)
- Validation Planning or Test Protocols
