Design Engineer
Design Engineer – Geotechnical (Kentish Town, London)
Murphy is recruiting for a Design Engineer to work within our Applied Engineering division from our London office, based in Kentish Town.
We are currently looking for a Geotechnical Design Engineer to join our award-winning team. Renowned for our in-house expertise and relentless pursuit of innovation, the Senior Design Engineer will deliver safe, practical, and cost-effective designs for internal clients. These will meet the highest standards of professional competence while ensuring full compliance with Company procedures.

A Day in the Life
As a Design Engineer, your responsibilities will include:
- Delivering constructability reports for linear infrastructure projects
- Conducting Pre-FEED and FEED studies for major pipeline and HV power cable infrastructure projects across the UK
- Supporting planners and estimators with technical input during FEED phases
- Leading design risk assessments and reviewing technical reports
- Coordinating design activities within the engineering team and representing the design department at internal/external meetings
- Conducting site visits as required
- Accurately recording time spent on projects and managing team workloads
- Coaching and mentoring team members for professional growth
- Assisting bid teams with technical input for tender submissions, including design estimates
- Providing specialist knowledge for trenchless crossing designs (e.g., HDD, microtunnels, auger bores)

Are you ready to make an impact?
### Requirements
To excel in this role, we are seeking a candidate with:
- A degree in Mechanical or Civil Engineering
- Chartership (or on track to achieve it) with a professional institution regulated by the Engineering Council
- Experience with National Gas standards for transmission pipelines, as well as UK, EU, and international standards (e.g., PD8010, BS EN 14161, BS EN 1594)
- Familiarity with UK and international plastic pipe standards
- Direct experience in construction and design of linear infrastructure projects, including trenchless crossing technology
- Strong background in Pre-FEED, FEED, and detailed design of major UK-based infrastructure projects, aligned with Net Zero targets (2050)
- Experience with consent requirements for:
- Rail (NWR Forms A, B, and C)
- Road (CD622)
- Watercourse crossings (Environment Agency)
- Technical knowledge of construction plant and equipment for steel pipelines and plastic cable ducts
- Geospatial analysis software skills (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS)
- Exceptional technical report writing abilities
- Awareness of UK environmental restrictions relevant to the role
