Join Our Team: Design Engineer
We are looking for a motivated and detail-focused Design Engineer to join our Engineering Support team. Reporting to the Engineering Support Manager, you will play a key role in providing technical support across the business, supporting manufacturing, production, QA, procurement, and occasionally external customers.
This is a hands-on, collaborative role where you will be involved in designing jigs, fixtures, and tooling, producing and maintaining engineering drawings, and supporting technical problem-solving across a fast-paced manufacturing environment. As your experience grows, you may also become involved in in-service design modifications.
About Us
For over a century, MacTaggart Scott has played a vital role in supporting the Naval Defence sector, delivering innovative engineering solutions from design through to manufacture, commissioning, and long-term support. Established in 1898, we are proud of our engineering heritage, commitment to quality, and continuous improvement.
What is the Job About?
The Design Engineer provides technical and design support across multiple internal functions, helping to resolve manufacturing and engineering challenges in a timely and cost-effective manner. You will design components, jigs, fixtures, and tooling, and produce accurate engineering drawings to support production and manufacturing activities.
Success in this role is measured by the quality and accuracy of design outputs, responsiveness to technical issues, and the ability to support manufacturing and engineering teams effectively under time-sensitive conditions.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
