Design Engineer (All Levels) – Regularised Water Supply & Wastewater Treatment Projects
CMDP+ (Southern Water Framework) – Costain Group & MWH Treatment
About the Role
CMDP+ is now seeking Design Engineers with experience in Water or Wastewater treatment, along with expertise in Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Instrumentation, Control & Automation (ICA). As part of the Costain & MWH Treatment joint venture, you’ll work on construction schemes aimed at enhancing Southern Water’s water supply and wastewater treatment systems across the South and South-East regions.
This is a critical role as part of a major program to maintain and upgrade essential water infrastructure.
Responsibilities

Design & Technical Delivery:
- Produce and review tendering and design deliverables across your engineering discipline, ensuring alignment with client requirements and project needs.
- Execute work packages to cost, time, and quality benchmarks, managing resource allocation, change, and risks as necessary.

Collaboration & Coordination:
- Lead and participate in interdisciplinary technical reviews, meetings, and presentations to support scope delivery and resolve technical issues.
- Coordinate between team members, suppliers, designers, and the construction team to ensure safe, robust, and efficient design output.

Project & Team Support:
- Assist your team in meeting project outcomes and company sustainability targets, including tracking KPIs, carbon reduction, and project reporting.
- Foster knowledgeshared, promoting best practice, and influencing safety and operational excellence through team collaboration.

Essential Requirements
Experience & Skills

Technical Expertise:
- Proven design engineering experience in at least one of the following disciplines:
- Mechanical Engineering
- Civil Engineering
- Electrical Engineering
- Instrumentation, Control & Automation (ICA)
- Water or wastewater industry-specific knowledge.
- Proven design engineering experience in at least one of the following disciplines:

Project Management & Delivery:
- Ability to manage resources (teams, time, budgets) and report accurately on progress, risks, opportunities, and changes.
- Skilled in leading design meetings, presenting technical findings, and facilitating interdisciplinary collaboration.

Sustainability & Compliance Awareness:
- Understanding of sustainable design principles and UK regulatory frameworks (e.g., CDM, environmental, electrical, and process regulation).

Critical Work Practices:
- Reliability in engineering tasks—meeting deadlines, predicting challenges proactively, and delivering quality work consistently.
- Enthusiastic about professional development, best practice sharing, and mentorship within the design engineering team.

- Estimation & Risk Assessment:
- Ability to support cost estimate development, including scoping, hourly estimates, and identifying assumptions/risk factors.
Qualifications

Education:
- Degree or equivalent (HND/Foundation Degree acceptable, depending on experience) in a relevant engineering discipline (Civil, Electrical, Mechanical, ICA).
- Progressing towards or actively pursuing Chartered Status (e.g., with ICE, CIWEM, or other applicable professional bodies).

Licensed Compliance:
- UK driving licence (essential for project site access).

CMDP+ is the joint venture between Costain and MWH Treatment that delivers advanced schemes to maintain and upgrade Southern Water’s water supply and wastewater networks in Kent and Sussex, ensuring resilience, efficiency, and regulatory compliance for the region.
