Overhead Line Design Engineer – Permanent Role

Location

Based in Leeds, Stowmarket, or London, with options for homeworking. Travel required for client meetings, team meetings, and site visits.

Role Summary

Freedom Professional Services are seeking a skilled Overhead Line (OHL) Design Engineer to join our engineering team. You’ll be responsible for delivering high-quality OHL projects, from new builds to refurbishments, across transmission and distribution voltages (11kV–400kV).

You’ll collaborate closely with senior team members, perform technical design, compliance checks, and stakeholder support, while adhering to UK engineering standards, safety regulations, and project timelines.


Key Responsibilities

  • Project Delivery
    • Design and develop overhead line projects, ensuring compliance with technical standards, safety regulations, and client requirements.
    • Handle all aspects of OHL design, including:
      • Conductor sizing & modelling
      • Insulation selection & lighting protection
      • Line routing (PLS-CAD)
      • Clearance checks
      • Structure & foundation design (PLS-TOWER, PLS-POLE)
    • Produce technical documentation (reports, schematics, specifications, calculations) with precision and compliance.

  • Project Leadership & Budget Management

    • Prepare management proposals, allocate resources, and develop cost programs for OHL projects.
    • Work with ECN, NEC contract conditions, and the wider design and construction team.
    • Provide technical mentoring and training to junior engineers, enhancing team capabilities.
  • Compliance & Site Work

    • Align with Freedom/NGB’s quality assurance standards and project management methodologies.
    • Attend site visits, inspection tours, and stakeholder meetings as required.
    • Advise on CDM 2015 and Electricity Safety, Quality, and Continuity Regulations.

Requirements for the Role

Technical Expertise

  • Degree in Structural or Electrical Engineering (or related disciplines).

  • 3+ years’ experience in OHL design (transmission & distribution networks):

    • Handling wood pole and lattice steel tower OHL installations.
    • Folded steel pole OHL experience is a plus.
    • Solid knowledge of UK-specific OHL design standards and practice rules.
  • Key Technical Skills

    • Proficiency in PLS-CADD, PLS-Pole, and PLS-TOWER.
    • Intermediate to advanced skills in AutoCAD 3D (essential).
    • Understanding of MicroStation CAD (desirable).
    • Ability to work with CSCS Card (desirable).

Professional & Regulatory Requirements

  • Familiarity with:
    • Design application contracts (ECN, NEC).
    • Construction & maintenance workflows.
    • Engineering ethics and risk management.
  • CSCS Card Holder (highly desirable).
  • Full UK driving license.

Soft Skills & Business Expectations

  • Strong communication skills to translate complex technical details to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Commercial awareness and budget management at project level.
  • Committed to improving skills towards professional chartership within engineering.
