The Team
You will join the Reactor Plant Systems function within the Hazard Protection capability, a team responsible for defining and integrating hazard protection measures and Service Condition Control Measures (SCCM) across the plant. As the programme progresses through detailed design and licensing, your role will involve:
- Collaborating with civil, structural, architectural, systems, safety, control & instrumentation (C&I), and human factors engineers
- Working in a multidisciplinary, fast-paced environment
The Role
As a Design Engineer – Hazard Protection, you will play a key role in shaping the nuclear power station’s resilience against internal and external hazards. Your work will ensure:
- Design protection measures are hazard-informed, robust, proportionate, and fully integrated into the plant architecture
- Technical excellence alongside compliance with regulatory and safety requirements
Key Responsibilities
- Develop hazard protection concepts for structures, systems, and components
- Support engineering optioneering, trade-off studies, and design decision-making
- Define, manage, and allocate hazard protection and SCCM requirements across projects
- Integrate hazard protection designs with other engineering disciplines
- Deliver high-quality outputs, including design definitions, schematics, and substantiating reports
- Lead technical workshops, interface management, and design integration activities
- Identify and mitigate technical risks, assumptions, issues, and dependencies
- Apply configuration control, design assurance, and governance processes
- Engage with regulatory bodies and licensing authorities to support compliance
- Operate within health, safety, environmental (HSE), and regulatory standards

Your Profile (Essential & Desirable)
Essential
✅ Engineering degree (or equivalent experience) in a relevant discipline (e.g., Mechanical, Civil, Chemical, Nuclear, or Structural Engineering) ✅ Proven experience in engineering within a regulated or high-hazard environment (e.g., nuclear, chemical, oil & gas, aerospace) ✅ Aware of safety needs regarding internal/external hazards and their impact on design ✅ Understanding of hazard protection measures or safety-critical systems ✅ Experience or strong interest in systems engineering and requirements management ✅ Ability to work collaboratively in multidisciplinary teams ✅ Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills ✅ Proactive, inquisitive mindset with the ability to handle ambiguity
Highly Desirable
🔹 Nuclear, chemical, or aerospace engineering experience 🔹 Knowledge of nuclear plant safety standards (e.g., HSE/David incentives for the Design Management of Nuclear Facilities (DMNF)) 🔹 Experience in regulation, licensing, or SCCM management 🔹 Familiarity with plant design reviews, safety assessments, or hazard analysis methods (e.g., HAZOP, SIL)

Remuneration & Benefits
