Location: Portsmouth - fully site based for first 6 months then into a local arrangement hybrid working pattern Salary: Circa £41,000 depending on skills and experience

Role description:

We are seeking a skilled Structural Design Engineer to develop and validate installation solutions through detailed structural analysis and engineering calculations. The successful candidate will be responsible for producing comprehensive structural calculation reports that demonstrate the integrity, safety, and suitability of installation designs developed by Design Engineers.

Working closely with Senior Design Engineers, you will apply engineering principles, analytical methods, hand calculations and/or Finite Element Analysis (FEA) to assess design performance and provide confidence in proposed solutions. You will play a key role in maintaining high standards of quality, technical excellence, and service requirements.

Core duties:

  • Participating in a wide range of activities including concept design, detailed design, support to build, delivery and in service support to surface ship platforms
  • Collaborating with internal engineering teams to resolve technical challenges and optimise design solutions
  • Carrying out structural assessments using classical hand calculations and Finite Element Analysis following appropriate professional and technical standards
  • Producing structural calculation reports to support installation solutions developed by Design Engineers
  • Identifying personal training requirements, skills gaps and development requirements in own discipline
  • Conducting ship trials and survey’s as part of a team

Essential skills:

  • Degree qualified in Mechanical, Structural or a related Engineering discipline
  • Must possess a knowledge of analysis methods and their use in providing design assurance
  • Skilled in using FEA (preferably Ansys Workbench) and traditional hand calculation methods
  • Has a knowledge of warship design and the sound judgement needed to be able to make appropriate engineering decisions
  • Good knowledge of materials used in warships namely marine Steel, Aluminium and Composites
  • Ability to create structural calculation report and supporting analysis
  • Able to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary engineering environment

The Structures & Outfit Team:

The BAE Systems Structures & Outfit Team of engineers delivers mechanical design, testing, commissioning and fault-finding solutions across the Royal Navy fleet, including Queen Elizabeth Class carriers, Type 45 destroyers and Type 23 frigates, while expanding into shipbuilding, submarine programmes and major projects that keep the UK’s naval capability operational.
