Job Opportunity: Design Manager
I’m currently working with a highly respected and well-established residential contractor to recruit a Design Manager for their growing technical team. The role would suit an established Design Manager with experience in construction or residential development, but I would also be keen to speak with talented architects who are looking to transition into design management and develop their career within a contractor environment.
With a strong pipeline of projects and a commitment to quality, innovation, and sustainability, this organisation offers the opportunity to play a key role in the successful delivery of a diverse range of residential developments.
Role Overview
As Design Manager, you will work closely with internal departments, consultants, subcontractors, and project teams to coordinate and manage the design process from pre-construction through to project completion. You will ensure designs are practical, compliant, commercially viable, and delivered in line with programme requirements.
Responsibilities
- Managing and coordinating the flow of design information across multiple residential developments.
- Leading design coordination meetings with consultants, technical specialists, and internal stakeholders.
- Reviewing drawings, specifications, and technical information to identify risks, clashes, and opportunities for improvement.
- Ensuring compliance with planning conditions, building regulations, statutory requirements, and project specifications.
- Supporting the delivery of buildable, cost-effective design solutions through value engineering and collaborative problem-solving.
- Monitoring design progress to ensure information is issued accurately and in line with project programmes.
- Working closely with construction, commercial, and technical teams to support successful project delivery.
- Driving best practice, innovation, and continuous improvement throughout the design process.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
