Design Manager – Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS)
We're recruiting on behalf of our client for a Design Manager to lead the end-to-end design coordination and technical integration of Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects. This role will focus on the design and coordination of the Balance of Plant (BOP), including civil foundations, structural framing, medium-to-high voltage electrical infrastructure and control systems. The successful candidate will act as the key interface between the battery OEM and the project team, ensuring designs are fully integrated and ready for construction.
Key Responsibilities:
- Interface & Integration Management
- Act as the primary technical interface with battery suppliers, reviewing product data, thermal requirements and structural footprints.
- Oversee the detailed design of Balance of Plant infrastructure, including civil works and structural elements.
- Manage the design of site electrical infrastructure, including AC gathering systems, inverter/transformer configurations and MV/HV substation connections.

Principal Contractor Coordination & Constructability
- Optimise site layouts through value engineering to improve constructability and efficiency.
- Review design packages to ensure they are practical, clash-free and safe to build.
- Coordinate temporary works and logistics designs, including crane lift pads and staging areas for battery installation.

Control Systems & Auxiliary Integration
- Ensure reliable auxiliary power design for battery containers prior to commissioning.
- Coordinate the interface between the battery vendor's EMS/BMS and the site SCADA system.
- Integrate fire suppression, fire alarm and emergency shutdown systems into the overall site design.

Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Civil Engineering or Renewable Energy Engineering.
- Minimum of 5 years' experience in utility-scale renewables or substations.
- At least 2 years' experience working for an EPC or Principal Contractor on BESS or substation projects.
- Experience managing interfaces between client-supplied equipment and contractor-designed infrastructure.
- Strong knowledge of NFPA 855, National Electrical Codes and local grid compliance regulations.
- Proficiency with AutoCAD.
- Familiarity with cable sizing software such as ETAP or Amtech and 3D modelling tools such as Navisworks is advantageous.
