Design Manager – Engineering Design & Manufacturing

The Role
Reporting to the Operations Manager, you will lead the design drawing function and act as the engineering authority across our project portfolio. This role is accountable for delivering right-first-time, on-time design outputs, supporting the full project lifecycle from concept through to installation.
You will drive continuous improvement in design processes and products, maintaining governance, standards, and innovation while preserving the bespoke nature of our solutions.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and manage the design function, allocating resources across projects and product development
- Ensure on-time, right-first-time design release in line with stage-gate processes and customer expectations
- Own design change governance, including engineering adjudication and root cause analysis
- Drive design for manufacture and installation (DFM/DFI) to ensure cost-effective production
- Reduce design-related non-conformance (NCRs) and embed lessons learned into standard practice
- Develop and maintain a design standards library, calculation templates, and knowledge base
- Provide technical leadership for structural steel designs, adhering to British Standards, Eurocodes, and international standards
- Act as a client-facing technical authority, resolving complex design challenges
- Support internal teams including sales, production, contracts, and installation
- Manage external design partners and suppliers
- Monitor and report on design performance metrics (delivery, quality, cost, efficiency)
- Develop team capability through training, innovation, and adoption of tools such as BIM and AI

About You

- Degree in Structural, Civil, or Mechanical Engineering required
- Chartered (or working towards) preferred but not essential
- Proven experience leading engineering/design teams
- Strong background in manufacturing, steel structures, or bespoke projects
- Excellent leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills
