Role Overview

Location: London/South Hours: 40 hours per week Award: Unable to offer certificates of sponsorship

Kier Places is seeking a talented Design Manager to join our Building Solutions South team, working primarily in London and the surrounding regions. This is an exciting opportunity to join a supportive team during a period of growth, overseeing a diverse portfolio of construction and refurbishment projects valued up to £20 million.

The ideal candidate will have a genuine passion for design-led activities, thrive in a collaborative environment, and manage design processes from RIBA stage 1 to delivery—ensuring projects meet high standards, adhere to timelines, and build strong client and partner relationships.


Key Responsibilities

As a Design Manager, your day-to-day role will include:

  • Managing all aspects of design production, including:
    • Creating design programmes
    • Developing responsibility matrices
    • Setting up project schedules
  • Coordinating multi-disciplinary design teams and chairing design meetings to foster collaborative working
  • Reviewing designs for contract compliance, ensuring they meet:
    • Health and safety legislation
    • Sustainable building standards
  • Serving as the primary point of contact for clients on design-related matters, building trusted professional relationships
  • Supporting project teams to deliver on time and within commercial constraints, while effectively managing risks

Requirements

This role is ideal for you if you:

  • Hold an HNC/HND/Degree in a construction or engineering discipline, with membership of a relevant professional body (e.g., CIOB, APM, CIAT, RICS)
  • Have proven pre-construction experience on projects up to £20 million, with strong leadership in multi-disciplinary teams
  • Possess exceptional communication skills and enjoy building strong relationships with:
    • Clients
    • Colleagues
    • Supply chain partners
  • Are highly organised, adept at prioritising tasks, and comfortable working independently as well as collaboratively
  • Bring an enthusiastic approach to continuous improvement, problem-solving, and delivering solution-focused outcomes
