Civil Engineering Design Manager – Durham
Location: Durham
About Esh-Stantec This role is based within Esh-Stantec, a joint venture between Esh Construction and Stantec, a sustainable design and engineering firm. We partner with Northumbrian Water Group (NWG) as a Living Water Enterprise supply partner, delivering end-to-end solutions for water and wastewater capital infrastructure projects.
About The Role
As a Civil Engineering Design Manager at Esh-Stantec, you will lead the integration of design into complex water and wastewater infrastructure projects, ensuring that engineering solutions are practical, cost-effective, compliant with regulations, and environmentally sustainable. Your responsibilities include:
- Overseeing multidisciplinary design teams
- Coordination with construction, commercial functions, and stakeholders
- Collaborating with Northumbrian Water, regulators, and local authorities
- Delivering safe, timely, and sustainable outcomes across AMP 8 and future programmes
What We Will Expect From You
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and coordinate design for clean water and wastewater networks, treatment facilities, pipelines, and civil structures
- Align design outputs with construction methodology, programme constraints, and TOTEX targets
- Manage design deliverables, technical queries, and approvals against NEC 4 contract milestones
- Ensure compliance with:
- Northumbrian Water Engineering Standards
- UK water industry standards (WIS, CESWI)
- DWI/EA requirements & planning consents
- Maintain a live design risk register and facilitate early contractor involvement
- Oversee BIM workflows and digital tools (Civil 3D, Revit, ProjectWise)
- Facilitate Value Engineering and Collaborative Planning workshops
- Implement robust QA/QC procedures, including design verification, HAZOP/HAZCON reviews, and document control
- Foster collaboration across civil, MEICA, geotechnical, and temporary works teams
- Promote a culture of technical excellence and continuous improvement

Qualifications & Experience
Preferred Qualifications
- Degree in Civil Engineering or a related discipline
- Chartered status (e.g., MICE, CEng) highly desirable
- Proven experience in design management within the UK water sector ( contractor or design-build )
- Strong grasp of AMP cycles, TOTEX principles, and regulatory frameworks
- Proficiency in BIM and design software tools (Civil 3D, Revit), desirable

- Strategic thinker with technical leadership and strong decision-making abilities
- Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills
- Ability to lead multidisciplinary teams and collaborate effectively
- Commercial awareness with experience in NEC contracts and delivery models
- Strong organisational skills, detail-oriented approach, and proactive risk management
- Passion for innovation, sustainability, and delivering value in water infrastructure
