Design Manager
Design Manager – Building Safety Team (Legacy Projects)
Lewisham | Thurston Road Project
Bouygues UK are recruiting for an experienced Design Manager to join our Building Safety team, specialising in legacy projects. This key role will focus on design lead and coordination for the Thurston Road project, ensuring compliance with contractual and statutory requirements, while prioritising cost-effective and buildable solutions.
About the Role
You will be responsible for:
- Leading and managing the design process from inception through to construction.
- Ensuring designs meet all contractual and statutory requirements, including fire safety regulations and façade compliance.
- Coordinating cross-functional teams—clients, consultants, site management, and production teams—to align methodologies and buildability checks.
- Delivering the project on time, on budget, and within agreed commercial and safety frameworks.
Essential Criteria
- Relevant qualification in Construction, Architecture, or a related discipline.
- Strong technical background in façade design and exterior systems, with an in-depth understanding of fire safety risks and mitigation.
- Main contractor experience, preferably within design and build methodologies.
- Proven expertise in managing both commercial and construction design stages, including:
- RIBA Plan of Work familiarity.
- Building regulations knowledge.
- Planning process navigation.
- Demonstrable experience leading design for diverse project types, including:
- Residential developments
- Schools
- Hospitals
- Student accommodations
- Mixed-use facilities.
- Strong communication and negotiation skills, able to collaborate seamlessly with clients, consultants, procurement, and site teams.

Key Responsibilities
Design Process Leadership
- Manage and direct the design process across preconstruction and construction phases.
- Oversee compliance of designs with statutory standards and best practice, ensuring buildability and efficiency.
- Align method of construction choices with commercial viability and safety outcomes.
Consultant & Team Coordination
- Act as the primary liaison between:
- Client
- Design consultants
- Project teams
- Coordinate the creation, review, and sign-off of all design documentation.
Information and Compliance Management
- Ensure smooth flow of design information, adhering to document management systems.
- Contribute to procurement strategies with the commercial and construction teams.
Overall Accountabilities
- Project Design Management at all stages.
- Leadership for design consultants and third-party academics (if applicable).
- Facilitating client, consultant, and site team communication.
- Strategic planning for design packages and procurement strategies.
