The Opportunity

The UK energy sector is undergoing a seismic shift, driven by increasing demand, evolving regulations, ambitious net-zero targets, and rapid technological innovation. This transformation presents a unique opportunity to be part of an industry that is reshaping the future of energy infrastructure.

As part of our continued growth, we are keen to connect with experienced Design Managers for future opportunities within our Energy team. This is a chance to play a key role in delivering major infrastructure projects that support the UK's energy transition, while helping clients navigate some of the sector’s most complex technical and environmental challenges.

With opportunities across a diverse portfolio of projects—including energy from waste, solar, interconnectors, wind farms, substations, overhead lines, LVAC systems, pump stations, and energy buildings—you will have the chance to make a meaningful impact while developing your career within a growing and collaborative business.

About The Role

As a Design Manager, you will lead and coordinate multidisciplinary design teams, ensuring the successful delivery of projects from concept through to completion. Working closely with clients and project stakeholders, you will oversee the planning, management, and execution of design activities, ensuring solutions are technically robust, commercially viable, and aligned with project objectives.

A key focus of the role will be managing FEED and detailed design activities across a variety of energy infrastructure projects, including substation refurbishments, extensions, and new-build developments. You will collaborate with technical specialists across multiple disciplines, helping to integrate engineering solutions and drive efficient, high-quality project delivery.

In addition to supporting project delivery, you will play an important role in fostering a positive and collaborative team environment, mentoring colleagues and contributing to the continued growth and success of Stantec's Energy business.

Your Impact

In this role, you will help shape the delivery of some of the UK's most important energy infrastructure projects, ensuring designs are developed efficiently, sustainably, and in line with client and industry expectations. Your leadership will help bring together multidisciplinary expertise, enabling teams to deliver innovative solutions that address technical, environmental, and operational challenges.

By managing the design process from concept through to implementation, you will support better project outcomes, improve coordination across stakeholders, and help mitigate risks throughout the project lifecycle. Your ability to balance technical excellence with effective project delivery will contribute directly to the successful development of infrastructure that supports the UK's evolving energy needs.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
