Job Title: Design Production Manager (Water Sector)

Location: Can be based from Bristol

Our Environment Division

We are now the largest Tier 1 Contractor in the UK Water/Environment sector, with an annual portfolio valued at £400 million. As part of our Source to Sea Strategy, we have consolidated all Engineering Design under one Business Unit, expanding to provide in-house support to our Regional Business Units across the UK.


Purpose of the Role

As Design Manager, you will:

  • Be a key member of the wider Engineering Design Team, collaborating with:
    • Design Delivery Manager(s)
    • Design Lead(s)
    • Discipline Manager(s)
    • Principal Engineer(s)
    • Multi-disciplinary Designer(s)
  • Take ownership of complex and challenging designs, ensuring:
    • Technical excellence
    • Effective risk management
    • Full alignment with Safety, Health & Environment (SHE) standards
  • Report on programme and budget
  • Mentor and support Design Leads to ensure successful project delivery
  • Have line management responsibilities for Design Leads and other team members

Key Accountabilities

  • Lead the provision of engineering design solutions from inception to completion on large/g complex multi-disciplinary projects, internally and via partners.
  • Work with peers to ensure schemes adhere to:
    • Client specifications
    • Operational requirements
    • Appropriate operational security
  • Apply "Doing the right thing" to maximize value and profit.
  • Implement and uphold Galliford Try’s SHE policy, legal requirements, and best practices to maintain a safe environment.
  • Embrace and promote Galliford Try’s EPIC values for both clients and the organisation.
  • Ensure compliance with:
    • Galliford Try Business Management System (GT BMS)
    • Relevant management systems
  • Implement Carbon, Digital, Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DfMA), and Innovation strategies.
  • Monitor technical, commercial, and programme compliance of design contracts.
  • Define project requirements by:
    • Reviewing documentation
    • Conducting site visits
    • Discussing with clients and suppliers
    • Pricing design inputs for commercial offers/tenders
  • Create and manage financial budgets and programmes for design activities.
  • Track tasks and project milestones accurately.

About You: Key Requirements

  • Proven leadership and management experience, with a focus on developing people.
  • Strong communication and stakeholder management skills.
  • High-level IT proficiency, including:
    • Excel
    • Outlook
    • PowerPoint
    • Cost/performance management systems (e.g. Oracle)
  • Extensive multi-disciplinary engineering design knowledge.
  • Deep knowledge of the Water Industry.
  • Strong commercial and contractual awareness.
  • Experience in team and line management.
  • Exceptional interpersonal communication skills.
