Design and Standards Manager – Edinburgh (Hybrid) | PAYE £34.01–£37.41/hour

A public sector organisation in Edinburgh is seeking a Design and Standards Manager on a temporary contract until 31 March 2027, based in Edinburgh with hybrid working.

Rate: £34.01 - £37.41/hour | Hours: 35 per week | Duration: Until 31/03/2027


Key Responsibilities

Project and Consultancy Management

  • Assist in developing strategic and project-specific responses for business needs through input into development plans, feasibility studies, and research.
  • Manage external consultants (e.g., for CDM advice, building control services, and design commissions) including:
    • Framework management for professional services
    • Directing design projects as needed
    • Monitoring progress, performance, and adequacy of deliverables
    • Overseeing consultants and initiatives for continuous improvement

Design Standards Development & Maintenance

  • Own the development, maintenance, and continuous improvement of design standards, specifications, and specialist systems.
  • Collate industry best practices and gather data from across projects to refine standards.
  • Disseminate standards updates and initiatives, including the development of new standards where required.

Project-Specific Delivery & Coordination

  • Align design standards with project needs, contributing from feasibility through handover.
  • Work closely with Project Sponsors and Project Managers:
    • Advise on design coordination and delivery
    • Assess deliverables and contribute to tender documentation
    • Provide feedback during construction/e handheld review stages for design integrity

Improvement & Post-Project Evaluation

  • Lead post-occupancy and post-completion reviews, including independent assessments and risk analysis.
  • Collaborate with teams to gather lessons learned, occupant feedback, contractor reports, and defect logs.
  • Implement continuous improvement initiatives based on project performance and stakeholder feedback.

Essential Skills & Experience

  • Qualification: Degree (or equivalent) in an engineering or built environment discipline, such as:

    • Architecture, Architectural Technology
    • Building/Building Engineering or Surveying
    • Construction or Construction Management
    • (Alternative construction-related HND also acceptable)
  • Project Management Experience:

    • Proven ability to manage design processes on large infrastructure projects.
    • Experience negotiating, influencing stakeholders, and delivering design outputs effectively.
  • Strategic Contribution:

    • Track record of researching and developing business-specific solutions for estates or infrastructure projects.

Desirable Skills

  • Experience in defining technical standards, monitoring supplier performance, and drivers of continuous improvement in design delivery.
