Senior Engineering / Design Manager – Infrastructure Projects

The AtkinsRéalis Infrastructure Project Delivery Practice (PDP) is the centre of excellence for delivering infrastructure projects, combining project and design management expertise to support public and private sector clients across diverse sectors. Our North Scotland & Northern Ireland (NS&NI) region, based in Manchester, drives growth in sectors including Water, Defence, Nuclear, Aviation, Energy, Rail (stations), and Urban Developments.
This role provides a career-defining opportunity for an experienced Engineering or Design Manager to lead projects from inception to completion, delivering across nuclear, defence, energy, and water infrastructure—an exciting chance to progress their expertise while supporting our region’s continued expansion.
About the Role
This position focuses on delivering high-quality design solutions within a multi-disciplinary environment. You will play a pivotal role in ensuring technical excellence and stakeholder engagement, while leading a collaborative team to meet deliverables on time, cost, and quality.
Key Responsibilities:

Design and Quality Management:
- Author, maintain, and govern a robust Design Management Plan, integrating input from discipline leads.
- Lead Technical Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QA/QC) processes and ensure compliance with standards.
- Oversee the development, tracking, and delivery of all project deliverables, aligning scope, deadlines, and resources.

Process and Delivery Optimisation:
- Establish efficient technical processes to enhance design consistency, reduce waste, and streamline delivery.
- Ensure clear communication of design choices and requirements, using standardised tools forms.

Stakeholder and Team Engagement:
- Facilitate collaborative meetings with client stakeholders and design teams to integrate operational needs into designs.
- Ensure actions are logged, assigned, and closed, maintaining accountability.
- Mentor, inspire, and coordinate multi-disciplinary teams—linking engineers, designers, and stakeholders.

- Technical Coordination & Risk Mitigation:
- Align design output with multi-disciplinary compliance—ensuring cohesive project delivery.
- identify risks and capitalise on opportunities to enhance project value.
- Promote and enforce standardised designs and products to maintain consistency.
About You
We are seeking a **seasoned Engineering or Design Manager with a proven track record of leading complex, multi-disciplinary projects across build, handover, and operation phases.
Requirements:

Chartered Engineer/Architect or equivalent, with demonstrable experience in delivering design, construction, and operational solutions.

Strong grasp of system integration, design principles, and technical management processes for infrastructure projects.

Proven ability to lead large projects—particularly within Nuclear, Defence, Energy, or Water sectors.

Familiarity with construction contracts (e.g., NEC3/NEC4) and project delivery methodologies.
- Self-starter with the ability to work independently or within a multi-disciplinary team.
- Skilled in BIM and 3D modelling, with experience applying digital tools to enhance design coordination.
- Customer-focused mindset: committed to managing client relations, meeting their needs, and managing expectations.

Cultural agility: inspire and lead teams while liaising with clients across varied environments.
- Reusquate communication, both written and verbal, with excellent interpersonal and organisational skills.
- Proactive, results-driven, and adaptable—thrive in pressured environments while meeting deadlines.

Flexibility required: prepared to travel across the UK, spend time at client sites, and work remotely where necessary.
