Engineering / Design Manager – Infrastructure Project Delivery Practice (PDP) – Manchester

The AtkinsRéalis Infrastructure Project Delivery Practice (PDP) is the Centre of Excellence for delivering infrastructure projects, combining project management and design expertise to offer a comprehensive suite of services to clients in both the public and private sectors. Our team handles design services across key markets including:
- Water Infrastructure
- Defence Infrastructure
- Nuclear
- Aviation
- Energy
- Rail (stations)
- Urban Developments
We currently have an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic Design Manager within our North, Scotland, and Northern Ireland (NS&NI) region, based in our Manchester office.
This role—intended for a talented and ambitious Engineering/Design Manager—provides an excellent chance to progress in your career by overseeing projects from inception to completion while expanding your experience across a diversity of infrastructure projects. The role will likely involve hybrid working from our NS&NI offices as well as time spent at client sites to ensure seamless delivery.
Our hiring comes at a time of significant success for the division, with strong growth anticipated across the Northern regions, primarily in Nuclear, Defence, Energy, and Water sectors. Successfully defending, refining, and expanding these markets has created a highly sought-after need for experienced project managers.
Joining the PDP infrastructure team offers you the ability to engage in the full suite of AtkinsRéalis deliveries—from refurbs, new builds, nuclear developments, defence projects, and water infrastructure—allowing you to hone, showcase, and progress your project management expertise through hands-on experiences.
Responsibilities
Qualification & Technical Oversight
- Author robust Design Management Plans and ensure their maintenance through close consultation with discipline leads, adhering to governance processes.
Compliance & Processes
- Implement Technical Quality Assurance/Control.
- Develop, track, and manage design deliverables.
- Establish effective technical delivery processes that align with time, cost, and quality targets.
- Ensure all key design decisions and technical requirements are captured and documented through clearly defined tools or forms.
- Work collaboratively with Project Managers to engage with clients when additional scope or changes emerge.

Stakeholder Management & Coordination
- Host stakeholder meetings to drive engagement across all stakeholders, ensuring operational requirements are integrated into the design process.
- Facilitate meeting actions and ensure effective closure.
- Foster a multi-disciplinary design team through energetic mentorship.
Coordination & Linkage
- Act as a multi-disciplinary designer liaison, ensuring alignment between delivery teams.
Communication
- Organise effective internal communications, balancing the use of digital tools (such as Microsoft Teams) and in-person interaction for project clarity.
- Liaise frequently with both Project Managers and subject-matter experts to effectively manage resources.
- Ensure seamless multi-disciplinary compliance with design briefs and performance standards, fostering tight allignment across contracted work.
Technical Insight & Standards
- Uphold corporate design standards and developments within the project scope.
- Coordinate multi-disciplinary consistency in design outputs, ensuring uniform quality and alignment with project milestones.
Requirements
Qualifications & Experience
- Chartered Engineer or Architect, or equivalent, with demonstratable experience in managing projects involving design, build, and operations internally.
- Strong technical knowledge of integration principles as applied to multi-discipline designs.
- Understand management processes for integration, including analytical and investigative methodologies.
- Proven success in managing major projects within the infrastructure sector.
- Contract experience with forms of NEC3 or NEC4 contracts.
Soft Skills & Flexibility
- Self-motivated, capable of working both independently and within a multi-disciplinary team.
- Familiar with BIM (Building Information Modelling) and its application for 3D modelling, coordination, and information management across the Model.
- Possesses customer-focused mentality, with strong client relationship management skills.
- Energetic, flexible, and team-oriented, with:

- Reliability and adaptability
- The ability to work efficiently under pressure, meeting demanding deadlines
Leadership & Development
- Demonstrated competence in team management, exercising strong leadership qualities.
