Desktop Support Engineer - 2nd Line
Ready to take your IT career to the next level and work on secure, high-impact environments?
We’re looking for two enthusiastic Desktop Support Engineers to join our growing 2nd Line support team in Gloucestershire.
Following internal promotions, these roles are key backfills that will strengthen the resilience of our team and support critical service delivery.
You’ll be working on a Windows desktop estate within Aerospace, Defence and Security, gaining hands-on experience with enterprise technologies in a fast-paced and highly secure environment.
This is a great opportunity if you’re currently in a 1st Line role and ready to step up, or if you’re a 2nd Line engineer looking to deepen your technical expertise.
The team provides cover between 8:00am and 5:00pm, with flexibility to start and finish earlier where required.
The service operates in a 24/7 environment, with participation in a 1-in-6 on-call rota.
Engineers receive an on-call allowance for the duty week, plus enhanced overtime rates of 1.5x standard pay for Saturdays and 2x standard pay for Sundays.
During on-call periods, engineers are required to carry a pager and mobile phone at all times and be available to respond to incidents as needed.
Due to the highly secure nature of this work, candidates must either hold current Developed Vetting (DV) clearance or be eligible and willing to undergo the Enhanced Developed Vetting (eDV).
Due to the highly secure nature of the work, this is an office-based role in Gloucestershire.
We do, however, support flexible working patterns where possible, including compressed hours such as working five days over four.
What you'll be doing:
- Provide in-depth technical support for Windows desktop solutions, troubleshooting issues and performing root cause analysis through to resolution.
- Manage virtual desktop infrastructures within Citrix XenDesktop.
- Test and release Windows desktop security patches, ensuring system integrity.
- Create and maintain automated desktop builds using Microsoft Deployment Toolkit (MDT)
- Maintain Active Directory (AD) and Group Policy Objects (GPO) across the desktop estate.
- Respond to customer queries promptly and escalate issues in line with established procedures.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
