About the Role
Are you passionate about building relationships with young people where they are—in public spaces, on estates, and in parks? Join Lewisham’s dynamic Youth Service team as a Detached Youth Worker.
You will engage with young people in their communities, provide guidance, build trusted relationships, and help them access opportunities while staying safe. This includes:
- Understanding and responding to young people’s diverse needs and interests
- Supporting engagement with community services and initiatives
- Monitoring progress and contributing ideas to improve the programme
Responsibilities
As part of a dedicated team, your role will involve:
- Engaging with young people in Lewisham’s town centres, parks, and estates
- Identifying opportunities to signpost young people to relevant services, activities, and support
- Building trusted relationships with individuals across diverse backgrounds
- Supporting young people to participate in community activities, learn new skills, and stay safe
- Contributing to evaluation and development of youth work strategies and initiatives

What We’re Looking For
You will bring the following to the role:
- Experience working with young people from diverse backgrounds, ideally as a detached youth worker
- Strong ability to initiate conversations and engage young people in meaningful ways
- Commitment to contextual safeguarding
- Emotional resilience & teamwork—collaboration is key
- A passion for community engagement and supporting young people’s development
Location & Working Conditions
- Primary location: Lewisham Borough (street-based & public spaces)
- Hybrid working model: Office-based work and occasional homeworking
Key Requirements
- Level 3 Youth and Community (JNC) qualification required
- Ability to work weekends as part of the role
- Enhanced DBS check will be conducted

Salary & Opportunities
£32,384 to £33,384 per annum (SC4 scale), prorated for a 18-hour workweek.
- Starting Point: All new hires start at the minimum spinal column point (SCP): only exceptions apply if matching current salary (with proof).
- Permanent role, allowing for career progression within Lewisham’s Youth Services.
