Department: Application Development & Enablement — BG-UK


About the Department

The Operations stream supports business teams by delivering first-class Information System capabilities. This includes building new applications, enhancing existing systems, and providing bespoke and packaged software development.

The Operations team specialises in evolving critical applications—ranging from legacy Oracle Forms to modern web-based and third-party systems—ensuring the organisation possesses the tools needed to thrive.


Purpose of the Role

Baillie Gifford is looking for an Application Developer to support this mission.

The role involves:

  • Gaining expertise across a range of in-house applications (Oracle, web, third-party tools).
  • Designing and delivering innovative solutions with a strong customer focus.
  • Providing production support for critical business-critical applications.

You’ll work with Agile teams to collaborate with Business Analysts, Developers and Testers to deliver solutions efficiently.

Baillie Gifford cultivates a strong learning culture, offering training in:

  • Tech stack: Oracle, .NET, Angular, Azure, Azure DevOps

Responsibilities

Key tasks from this role include:

  • Development & Testing:

    • Analyse, design, build, and test RDBMS applications.
    • Implement ERP system integrations.
    • Deploy third-party and in-house applications in live environments.
  • Collaboration & Stakeholder Engagement:

    • Liaise with business teams to uncover and fulfil requirements.
    • Represent technical expertise to project stakeholders and management.
    • Align with other project areas, Business Analysts and Testers.

  • Support & Training:

    • Provide user support on developed applications.
    • Deliver end-user training as needed.
    • Update standards and technical documentation.
  • Quality & Governance:

    • Ensure strong development practices and project governance.
    • Maintain adherence to professional coding standards.
  • Ownership & Delivery:

    • Take full accountability for fulfilling business requirements on time and on budget.
    • Work toward scalable, high-performance solutions with a mindset of maintainability.

Knowledge & Experience Requirements

Technical Proficiencies (Crucial)

  • **.NET Core (C# preferred).
  • **Entity Framework (Core preferred).
  • API and microservice development.
  • JavaScript frameworks (Angular highly preferred).
  • Strong SQL & PL/SQL experience (critical for maintenance and innovation in our Oracle-heavy stack).
  • Developer Workflow Skills:
    • Source control (Git, Azure DevOps, SVN, TFS) with CI/CD pipelines.
    • Unit testing, automated testing, debugging.
    • Know how to facilitate pull requests and code reviews.

Preferred Technical Proficiencies (Advantage)

  • Entrenched expertise in TypeScript (independent development), DDD, TTD.
  • Docker, Kubernetes, RabbitMQ/AMQP (messaging systems).
  • Release Management.
  • Hybrid & "greenfield" development experience.

Analytical & Industry Expertise

  • Full project lifecycle: Database design, architecture, and requirements gathering.
  • Soft skills: Systems thinking, collaboration, Agile (Scrum/Kanban).
  • Problem-solving: Proven track record for adopting new technology and methodologies.
