Job Description

The Role

The Mainframe is critical to Next’s core business functions, encompassing websites, stores, warehousing, and distribution. Next’s Central Systems team plays a key role in the support, monitoring, and development of the Mainframe environment as a whole. We are the key liaison between Application Development and System Support, interacting daily with in-house developers, Mainframe architects, and 3rd party system programmers.

This is a key role in an exciting area, as Next continues to expand its mainframe capacity due to the ever-increasing demand for projects.

What You’ll Take On

As a key member of the team, you will support the Next Application Development teams on strategic projects, ensuring they have the technical backing to succeed. You will actively evaluate, test, and implement new development support toolsets, taking the lead on training the wider team to ensure seamless adoption. Championing system integrity will be a core focus, and you will oversee strict adherence to accepted Mainframe standards and policies across the board.

When issues arise, you will assist with application and system incident investigation, driving root-cause analysis and delivering effective resolutions. You will play an active role in the review and quality assurance of planned change deployments to minimize risk. Additionally, you will collaborate with third parties and business stakeholders to produce sustainable, efficient design solutions, whilst liaising regularly with your team members to plan future developments and support the system.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
