Job Title: Development Engineer

Department: Design

Reporting to: Development Manager

Wipac Technology Limited is Europe’s leading automotive lighting designer and manufacturer for the luxury and supercar markets. We supply headlamps and rear lamps for many of the world’s most iconic car brands. Wipac has grown significantly in recent years and was sold to a large Chinese corporation Anrui Optoelectronics at the end of 2019. Anrui have a strong desire to invest significantly and continue to grow their share of the European and North American automotive lighting markets. Wipac is focussed on its transformation to be a world-class manufacturer and as such wants to attract the best individuals who have the drive and commitment to contribute to the positive change of the business.

Main purpose:

Development of automotive lighting systems for supercar and prestige car lighting programs

Job content:

  • Support design and development of pre-production exterior lighting products as part of the Wipac design team.
  • Evaluate mechanical, optical and electronic system design to ensure compliance with customer standards and regulatory requirements. Compare laboratory measurements and optical simulation results to identify any deviations.
  • Investigate and determine the root cause of non-conformities in laboratory measurements and optical simulation results. Develop suitable test methods to support these investigations.
  • Oversee the product development process from initial off tool parts to preparation of samples for homologation testing. Support homologation testing at external laboratories as required.
  • Operate Wipac light laboratory to perform photometric and colour testing on automotive lighting products. Operate a luminance camera to evaluate homogeneity of lighting designs.
  • Complete an evaluation of test data and present results appropriately to communicate findings to internal design teams and customers.
  • Support the photometric testing and development of prototype lighting products or modules to support the Wipac advanced development team.

Required Qualifications /Skills:

  • Educated to Degree/HND level in a relevant engineering or scientific subject.
  • Self-motivated to produce high quality work and complete tasks within deadlines.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team with good communications skills.
  • Have a methodical approach to problem solving.
  • Good analytical skills, with the ability to identify and investigate test anomalies, document non-conformances, and support root cause analysis.

Preferred (but not essential):

  • Experience with LED lighting systems and an understanding of electronic and optical systems.
  • Experience of automotive lighting and familiarity of relevant regulations.
  • Basic understanding of photometric testing theory. Practical experience of using photometric test equipment such as a goniophotometer, illuminance meter.
