Development Engineering Manager - BESS & Renewable Energy
Location: Hybrid (Home-Based/Travel to project sites)

We are partnering with a rapidly growing energy storage developer and operator that is delivering some of the UK's largest battery storage projects. Backed by significant institutional investment and with a multi-gigawatt pipeline of projects in development, construction, and operation, the business is playing a key role in enabling the UK's transition to a cleaner, more resilient energy system.
As part of its continued growth, the company is seeking an experienced Development Engineering Manager to join its high-performing Growth & Strategy team.
This is a rare opportunity to influence major infrastructure projects from development through financing, procurement, construction, and operation.
The Opportunity
Reporting to a senior executive within the growth and strategy function, you will provide technical leadership across a portfolio of utility-scale battery energy storage projects.
You will work closely with developers, investors, advisors, contractors, OEMs, and grid stakeholders, helping to shape project strategy, optimize technology selection, and ensure robust technical and commercial decision-making throughout the project life cycle.
This role offers significant exposure to:
- Utility-scale BESS development
- Technical due diligence and project acquisitions
- Major equipment procurement and supplier selection
- Project financing and lender technical reviews
- Asset optimisation, augmentation, and expansion strategies
- Emerging battery technologies and market innovations

Key Responsibilities
- Lead technical due diligence activities for project acquisitions and advanced-stage development opportunities.
- Review and challenge key technical, operational, and financial assumptions including performance, degradation, CAPEX, and OPEX.
- Manage technical aspects of battery system procurement, including specifications, design criteria, and supplier evaluation.
- Provide expert input into grid connection assessments and network integration activities.
- Support planning and permitting activities, including technical elements of environmental, transport, and construction management plans.
- Interface with investors, lenders, technical advisers, and engineering consultants during financing processes.
- Evaluate technology developments and identify opportunities to improve asset performance and project economics.
- Support project delivery teams in resolving technical, regulatory, and compliance matters during construction.
- Provide operational support for performance testing, grid compliance, and long-term asset optimisation strategies.
About You
We are looking for an ambitious and commercially-minded engineering professional who combines strong technical expertise with the ability to influence stakeholders across a complex project environment.
Essential Requirements
- 5+ years' experience in power generation, renewable energy, or energy storage with a development engineering focus.
- 3+ years' experience working directly with battery energy storage systems, lithium-ion technologies, or system integration.
- Degree qualified in Electrical Engineering, Renewable Energy, Industrial Engineering, or a related discipline.
- Strong understanding of utility-scale energy infrastructure projects.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
- Ability to engage confidently with both technical and non-technical audiences.

Desirable Experience
- Battery storage and hybrid renewable projects (solar + storage / wind + storage).
- Balance of Plant (BOP/BOS) engineering.
- MV and HV substation engineering.
- Technical support for project finance transactions.
- Mergers & acquisitions, technical due diligence, or lender engineering processes.
