Development Manager – Engineering Leadership (Multi-Team Delivery)
Location: Fully Remote (UK residents only) Contract Type: Permanent Remuneration: Up to £90,000 Starting: ASAP (4-week maximum notice) Salary Note: No sponsorship – UK residents with existing right to work only
About the Role
At a well-established, profitable B2B tech business, trusted by enterprise clients in a highly regulated, high-transaction industry, the engineering function is undergoing a strategic evolution. This involves:
- Consolidating teams around product areas
- Introducing embedded QA
- Maturing SDLC (Software Development Lifecycle) practices
As one of two new Development Managers, your role is critical:
- Lead multi-team delivery with end-to-end ownership of clusters
- Coach Tech Leads toward autonomy
- Be the single point of accountability for cluster delivery health
⚠️ This is not a:
- Scrum Master role
- Architecture-focused leadership position
- Line management role with merely a promotion -Ceremony-centred facilitation
Genuine multi-team ownership required.
Key Qualifications ⚠️ (Non-Negotiables) 🚨
Applicants must demonstrate all of the following:
🔹 Leadership
- Prior experience as Engineering Manager or Tech Lead with full delivery accountability
- Line-managed Tech Leads or senior engineers, including performance ownership and coaching
- Ownership of sprint commitments, production releases, and team health
- Ability to coach toward autonomy rather than micromanaging teams

🔹 Delivery
- Multi-team delivery ownership—previously held outcome accountability across one+ teams simultaneously
- Shepherding software releases in production, aligning multi-team workstreams
- Proven cross-team dependency management:
- Naming clear ownerships
- Tracking dependencies
- Resolving technical and operational interfaces between teams
- Strong cross-organisation communication with:
- Product stakeholders
- Senior leadership
🔹 Environment Familiarity
- Product engineering background (SaaS or embedded products)
- Shipped in a edevoped cadence
- Previous senior engineer/Tech Lead role before transitioning to leadership
- Comfortable in a regulatory, compliance-aware environment
Core Responsibilities
📌 Line Management 🔧
- Develop and successor-build 2–3 Tech Leads
- Hold them accountable for team delivery outcomes
- Coach toward self-managed, high-performing teams
📌 End-to-End Delivery 🚀
- Own commitment tracking, quality gates, and production releases
- Lead release coordination (timing, sequencing, cut-over, verification)
- Ensure conpateway within each release’s health/critical load thresholds

- Own and resolve all cross-team dependencies within your cluster
- Implement dependency tracking systems
- Close ormos and eductive friction
📌 Program-Level Clarity ✅
- Provide transparent status reports to Product and Head of Engineering
- Deliver diligent, unvarnished, solution-focused insights
- Work with leadership to chart capacity and prioritisation trade-offs
📌 Engineering Guidelines & Compliance 📜
- Adhere to company guilds (architecture, quality, observability, SDLC standards)
- Inherently embed Incident discipline and operational health practices
Nice-to-Have Perks (But Not Required)
✔ Experience in regulated industries (financial services, payments, healthcare) ✔ fluency in C#/.NET at enterprise scale ✔ Proficient in Azure DevOps (backlog, pipelines, deployments) ✔ Having detailed exposure to transitions like:
- team consolidation
- matrix-organised scaling
- embedded QA adoption
