Role Overview
Working as part of the IT team, this role supports the development and maintenance of Punch’s business process applications. You will assist in scoping, developing, and delivering applications while also supporting end-users. Key responsibilities include writing and maintaining code, resolving bugs, monitoring application performance and stability, and supporting user feedback and reporting.
You will also work closely with the Development Manager to respond to development and support requests and participate in testing and validation of new functionality to ensure applications are reliable, effective, and aligned with business needs.
This is a office-based role located at our head office in Burton upon Trent.

Accountabilities
- Assist in the full development lifecycle, including design, basic unit testing, user sign-off, documentation, training, and review, while supporting communication with key stakeholders and managing delivery expectations under supervision.
- Monitor and report on development progress, helping to ensure work is delivered within agreed timelines.
- Support the implementation of standardised reporting and business process solutions in line with the wider Business and IT Strategy.
- Contribute to the continuous improvement of applications to ensure solutions deliver the intended benefits and business value.
- Engage with Punch teams and wider business activities to ensure solutions are fit for purpose, proactively identifying opportunities where IT can provide additional support and value.
- Assist in identifying opportunities to improve existing processes and practices to enhance system performance and efficiency.
- Support day-to-day development activities, contributing to the implementation of basic solutions and optimisations.
- Contribute to individual and team technical projects, supporting tasks as required and learning from more experienced colleagues.
- Communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders, ensuring clear, professional, and respectful interactions.
- Demonstrate a commitment to continuous learning by identifying opportunities for personal and professional development.
- Work in a professional and organised manner, meeting agreed deadlines and contributing to team objectives.
- Build positive relationships with colleagues and customers, contributing to excellent customer service and supporting the effectiveness of application-supported processes.

Person Specification – Technical Competencies/Professional expertise
- Proactive and enthusiastic, with a focus on delivering effective solutions that add value to the business.
- Strong organisational skills with the ability to prioritise and manage workload effectively.
- Quick to learn and adapt to new software, systems, and technologies.
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with colleagues and key stakeholders.
- Able to follow instructions while working collaboratively within a team environment.
- High level of attention to detail and accuracy.
- GCSEs (or equivalent) in English and Maths.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office applications and standard email systems.
Developer Competencies
- Ability to write and debug code; experience with BPM platforms such as Appian is desirable but not essential. Familiarity with SQL, VBA, or object-oriented programming would be advantageous.
- Experience with SQL Server, including writing and executing simple queries, understanding basic database structures, and performing straightforward data manipulation.
- Understanding of fundamental application development principles, with the ability to apply these concepts when assisting with development tasks.
- Ability to perform basic data analysis and troubleshooting, supporting more senior team members in resolving routine issues.
- Awareness of coding standards and best practices, with a willingness to learn and apply them in development work.
- Familiarity with software testing and debugging techniques, and an understanding of their importance in maintaining code quality.
