Sedgwick is seeking a Development Surveyor to join our specialist Structural Defects Services team, supporting projects across the West Midlands and South (M5 corridor).

The Opportunity

This role is ideal for someone early in their surveying, construction, or engineering career who is eager to:

  • Develop technical expertise in structural defects and building pathology
  • Build a strong foundation through structured mentorship and on-the-job learning
  • Progress confidently into more complex, high-value work

You’ll support the management of a diverse portfolio of structural and latent defect cases spanning commercial, residential, and multi-unit properties, guided and trained by experienced colleagues. Key responsibilities include:

  • Assisting with site inspections
  • Collecting evidence for defect assessments
  • Supporting the initial diagnosis and causation analysis of damage
  • Contributing to preliminary reports
  • Reviewing technical documentation
  • Collaborating with senior colleagues and external engineers to refine repair strategies

  • Reviewing scopes of work for repair projects
  • Monitoring reinstatement progress
  • Drafting parts of final reports

After an initial home-based position with travel, expect flexibility as the model evolves based on role requirements.


What We’re Looking For

To apply for this role you should have or be working towards:

  • Fully valid UK driving license (essential for regional site visits)
  • Degree-level qualification (or equivalent qualification in progress) in surveying, construction, or engineering
    • Relaxed considerations for future chartership candidates (e.g., MSCS, MCIOB, MRICS, MICE)
  • Some aware knowledge in building construction and structural defects (training fully funded)
  • An interest in insurance claims adjustment or defect-related work (desirable, but not essential)
  • Analytical mindset and willingness to learn how to diagnose defects and implement repair strategies
  • Proactive attitude: ability to work independently, collaborate remotely, and engage confidently with clients while growing professionally
