Development Underwriter
Property & Casualty (P&C) Development Underwriter – Commercial (Scotland)

Job Overview
As a P&C Development Underwriter, you will:
- Transform how AXA partners with broker portfolios through responsive, flexible, and collaborative relationships.
- Balance technical underwriting expertise with trading capability to drive profitable growth in new business within the Scottish market.
- Be an empowered decision-maker focused on portfolio development.
- Require regular travel across Scotland.
Key Responsibilities
1. Underwriting & Negotiation
- Present AXA propositions for larger Mid-Market and Mid-Corporate risks, leveraging industry knowledge and technical expertise, aligned with case complexity.
- Collaborate with Trading Underwriters to negotiate coverage, wordings, and pricing tailored to customer needs.
- Proactively develop and manage a pipeline of Mid-Market/Mid-Corporate growth opportunities—leveraging both client and broker relationships for retention and origination.

2. Relationship & Broker Management
- Lead and embed the large case management process for new business.
- Build and maintain collaborative broker (and sometimes direct client) relationships across Scotland, owning the generation, underwriting, and retention of profitable business.
- Develop a quality distribution strategy and communication plan to ensure key broker KPIs are met.
3. Performance & Compliance
- Underwrite profitable new and existing business while ensuring alignment with AXA’s underwriting controls.
- Serve as the European referral point for complex cases in your region.
- Monitor and maintain a robust understanding of the region’s book performance (profits, retention, renewal rates, etc.).
Work Arrangements
AXA believes in flexible, smart working:
- 60% on-site (minimum 3 days a week), accommodating office visits, client meetings, and industry events.
- Flexible working arrangements negotiable with Talent Acquisition.
Skills & Experience Required
Essential:
- Expert technical underwriting knowledge in Property & Casualty (Scottish market).
- Proof of securing/capturing and retaining large-scale, complex risks via senior broker/customer relationships.
- Pipeline management experience, balancing technical and sales skills.
- Exceptional insight development, negotiation, and persuasion abilities.
- Proven customer/broker portfolio management track record.
- Strong DIP qualification or equivalent, with experience underwriting Mid-Market/Mid-Corporate business.
- Authorisation and legal eligibility to work in the UK.
- ISA Accredited training preference (but not mandatory) – Excellent working knowledge of the intermediary market.

Nice to Have:
- Notary credentials or competency in signings & suppositions (minimum requirement of role & Case Upon Case SOP).
IDD Compliance
This role is designated as an Insurance Distribution Directive (IDD) function. As a precondition:
- Pre-employment security screening required.
- Background checks every 4 years, with annual declarations in between.
