Specialist Dietitian – Diabetes

About the Role

We are seeking a highly motivated Specialist Dietitian to join our multidisciplinary Diabetes team at the Hackney Diabetes Centre, Homerton University Hospital. This team comprises nurses, dietitians, doctors, lay educators, and other healthcare professionals, delivering diabetes care across Hackney and the City of London.

The Diabetes Nurse & Dietitian team supports:

  • Patients attending the Hackney Diabetes Centre
  • Inpatients at Homerton University Hospital
  • Patients within each GP practice in Hackney and the City

With a focus on patient empowerment, the team provides:

  • Individual dietary consultations for Type 1, Type 2, and gestational diabetes
  • Structured education programmes via DAFNE, X-PERT, and insulin pump services for Type 1 Diabetes patients
  • Group-based diabetes education (Type 1 and Type 2)

The role involves clinical work, training, service development, and audit to ensure high-quality diabetes care.


Key Responsibilities

  • Clinical Care & Education
    • Provide dietetic consultations for individual patients and their carers, including those with Type 1 diabetes, Type 2 diabetes, or gestational diabetes
    • Deliver group-based diabetes education (structured programmes in alignment with DAFNE and X-PERT standards)
    • Conduct diabetes education sessions in GP surgeries and health centres across Hackney and the City
    • Support insulin pump training for Type 1 Diabetes patients

  • Collaboration & Service Development

    • Work closely with doctors, nurses, and lay educators to enhance multidisciplinary diabetes care
    • Develop and contribute to nutritional education resources for the Homerton University Hospital NHS Trust
    • Assist in setting clinical standards for dietary treatment of diabetes
  • Staff Training & Support

    • supervis**e training for student dietitians, with a focus on diabetes care
    • Provide training for hospital and primary care teams on diabetes nutrition principles
    • Contribute to clinical skill enhancement through supervision and audit
  • Research & Audit

    • Participate in clinical audits, surveys, and diabetes-related research projects
    • Support quality improvement initiatives within the Homerton Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust

Requirements

  • Essential Experience
    • Extensive clinical experience in Type 1, Type 2, and gestational diabetes management
    • Experience delivering both individual and group-based education (DAFNE/X-PERT preferred)
    • Insulin pump service experience advantageous
    • Commitment to training, audit, and continuous clinical improvement
