Diabetes Specialist Nurse – Band 6 (North Middlesex & Royal Free NHS Trusts)
About the Role
We are seeking a motivated and enthusiastic Band 6 Diabetes Specialist Nurse to join the North Middlesex Diabetes Team (initially) and later transition to the Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust to support the delivery of high-quality, patient-centred diabetes care.
The Band 6 Diabetes Specialist Nurse will work across inpatient and outpatient settings, supporting the assessment, management, and education of adults with diabetes, including those with complex needs. Working alongside senior Diabetes Specialist Nurses and the multidisciplinary team, you will contribute to safe and effective diabetes management, helping to improve glycaemic control and reduce diabetes-related complications.
Responsibilities
Clinical Support
- Provide specialist nursing input to ward teams, supporting:
- Insulin management
- Recognition and management of hypoglycaemia and hyperglycaemia
- Implementation of sick day rules within national and local guidelines
- Work as part of the multidisciplinary team to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate individualised care for patients with type 1, type 2 and secondary diabetes.
- Support senior Diabetes Specialist Nurses and diabetes consultants in the management of complex diabetes cases, including:
- Insulin initiation
- Insulin titration
- Ongoing glycaemic monitoring
- Provide timely specialist advice to ward teams across medical and surgical areas to promote safe and effective diabetes management.

- Deliver structured patient education to enable individuals to develop:
- Knowledge, skills, and confidence in diabetes self-management
- Contribute to education and training for:
- Nursing staff
- Junior doctors
- Allied health professionals
- Promote insulin safety, best practice, and materials to reduce diabetes-related harm.
Collaboration & Development
- Work collaboratively with:
- Diabetes consultants
- Dietitians
- Podiatrists
- Pharmacists
- Community and primary care colleagues
- Participate in:
- Audit activities
- Service development
- Quality improvement initiatives
- Support integrated care pathways for seamless patient transitions.
