Retinal Screener – South West London Diabetic Eye Screening Programme
Company Description
NEC Care, part of the NEC Health division, delivers the national diabetic eye screening programme. Our mission is to provide people-centric services that improve the health and wellbeing of those we serve by achieving excellence in service delivery.
South West London (SWL) Diabetic Eye Screening Programme (DESP) runs retinal screening clinics and image grading for people with diabetes across South West London boroughs. Commissioned by Public Health England on behalf of the NHS, we comply with National Service Framework (NSF) and National Screening Committee (NSC) standards.
The Opportunity

As a retinal screener, you’ll:
- Run local screening clinics to assess diabetic retinopathy
- Take eye photographs and speak confidently about health and medical conditions
- Work largely unsupervised (after training) in a fast-paced environment
- Deliver exceptional customer care, supporting patients to live healthier lives

This is a permanent, full-time role (37.5 hours/week, Monday–Friday) with full training provided.
About the Role
You’ll need to:
- Be empathetic, patient-focused, and able to discuss health with service users daily
- Have strong interpersonal skills and a customer service mindset
- Be organised, adaptable, and able to work under pressure
- Possess problem-solving skills and a cooperative attitude
Experience with the public is a bonus, but not essential.
Qualifications & Requirements
- Minimum of 5 GCSEs (A–C) in English, Maths, and Science (or equivalent qualifications)
- Right to work in the UK
- Willingness to learn and complete necessary training
No prior healthcare experience required!
