Job Description
The Digital Buildings Consultant's role is two-fold:
- To lead teams of consultants
- To deliver consultancy and systems engineering projects focused on Digital Building technologies, applications, processes, and standards.
Representing FPC in all client and partner interactions, the Consultant must maintain the highest standards of technical and professional performance, and conduct themselves with unwavering honesty and integrity at all times.
In addition to client-facing roles and project delivery responsibilities, the Digital Buildings Consultant is expected to:
- Act as a technical lead for project delivery.
- Be an effective Team Leader.
- Provide day-to-day development support to other team members.
- Be an active member of the Technology Consulting team, making a positive contribution to the development of the team and the wider FPC business.
- Work effectively with all FPC colleagues to successfully deliver projects and support FPC’s business objectives.
Core Responsibilities
The responsibilities for the Digital Buildings Consultant role include, but are not limited to, the following key areas:
1. Program and Project Management
- Deliver consulting and engineering services and projects to clients in accordance with the agreed-upon Proposal, Scope of Work (SoW), and/or Engagement Letter.

2. Client Management
- Develop and understand customer requirements and business objectives.
- Work proactively with FPC, the client, and other stakeholders to meet and deliver these requirements.
- Build and maintain positive relationships with client stakeholders.
3. Services and Solutions Delivery
- Provide expertise and collaborate on Digital Building systems integration, technologies, initiatives, solutions, processes, and standards for FPC and our clients.
- Design Digital Building systems and architectures to ensure optimum performance, functionality, and value.
- Review existing Digital Building systems architectures and designs, identifying issues and recommending improvements.
- Produce required service delivery, technical, and project-related reports.
4. Business Development
- Identify potential revenue opportunities for the FPC business line.
- Communicate these opportunities to FPC management.
- Support relevant business development activities as required.
5. Industry Expertise
- Maintain expertise, knowledge, and comprehensive understanding of industry trends, developments, and initiatives.
- Identify, develop, deliver, and support opportunities for continuous improvement within FPC.
6. FPC Corporate Responsibilities
- Represent FPC in a professional manner, both internally and externally, aiming to achieve a high level of customer satisfaction.
- Function as an effective Digital Building Services team member, communicating collaboratively with colleagues to contribute to the development of the team and the broader FPC business.
- Report to the line manager, acting in accordance with their requests, direction, and those of FPC management.
- Manage your own workload, communicating and escalating any issues to the line manager accordingly.
- Adhere to all FPC employment policies and procedures, including the FPC Employee Handbook, Health & Safety, and Time and Expenses Reporting.
7. Other Duties
- Carry out any other duties reasonably requested by FPC Management.
- Be able and willing to travel.
Qualifications
8. Required Experience and Qualifications
The successful Digital Buildings Consultant candidate should possess the following experience and qualifications:
9. Core Experience & Education
- Minimum 5 years of industry experience in Digital Building and IoT technologies.
- Proven track record in Digital Building-related roles (e.g., Consultant, Designer, Project Manager, or Engineer).
- Required Bachelor's or Master's degree in Controls, Engineering, Computer Science, or a closely related field.

10. Essential Skills
- Effective Stakeholder Management and Communication Skills, including:
- Attending project, client, and team meetings.
- Professional document writing.
- Presentation skills.
- Competence in using Google Suite and/or Microsoft Office software applications.
11. Deep Technical Expertise
- Strong technical expertise in Digital Building technologies, including proficiency in some or all of the following areas:
- Digital Building Systems Integration: Design, development, and implementation.
- Controls Systems: Including Building Management Systems (BMS) and Automation Systems, Lighting Controls Systems (LCS) and Audio Visual Systems (AV), Controls Strategies, Control Protocols (e.g., BACnet, MQTT, Modbus, LON, MBus, DALI, Fox, SMI).
- System Documentation & Design: Systems Specifications, System Architectures, Schematic Drawings & Wiring Diagrams, Description of Operations, Point Naming and Addressing, Asset Records.
- Network & Security: IP Networking (IPV4, IPV6, Switching, Routing, DHCP, WiFi, Structured Cabling, etc.), Cybersecurity best practices, System Audits & Site Surveys.
- Experience working as part of a Design Team to develop coordinated designs, including:
- Client requirements gathering and documentation.
- Technical Submittal creation and review.
- Scope of Work (SoW) and Specification development.
- Relevant Digital Building / IoT industry training and professional qualifications.
12. Desirable Experience and Qualifications
In addition to the requirements above, it is highly desirable that the Digital Buildings Consultant Engineer has experience or qualifications in the following:
- Design, delivery, and operation of IoT Systems.
- Use of Cloud Platforms (Google, Microsoft, Amazon) and Data Analytics tools.
- Design Software such as AutoCAD, BIM, or Visio.
- Project Methodologies, such as the RIBA/AIA Stages of Work or international equivalents.
- Experience with Construction Projects and Contracting.
- Specialized Systems: Systems Testing & Commissioning, Fault Detection and Diagnostics (FDD), and Automated Commissioning Systems.
