Digital Forensic Analyst – Job Description
Role Summary
**Role: **Digital Forensic Analyst **Department: **Crime Services **Location: **Sheffield **Salary: **£32,613 - £37,020 per annum **Hours: **37 per week **Contract Type: **Permanent
We are currently recruiting Digital Forensic Analysts to provide expert support to police investigations. If you are analytical, detail-oriented, and passionate about digital forensics, this role could be an excellent fit.
About the Role
You will play a crucial role in securing digital evidence and assisting police investigations by efficiently extracting, analysing, and presenting forensic data from electronic devices in accordance with strict guidelines.
Key Responsibilities

Secure and retrieve digital evidence from mobile phones, computers, and other devices, following:
- Digital Forensic Unit (DFU) SOPs
- ISO 17025 standards
- Forensic Science Regulator (FSR) Codes of Practice
- Using industry-leading forensic software and techniques

Process and analyse recovered data in compliance with DFU, ISO 17025, and FSR standards, and apply industry-standard forensic methodologies.

Present findings and specialist interpretations of digital evidence in a clear, accessible format for investigating officers, the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS), and courts.

Attend court proceedings to provide clarity on forensic findings and evidence.

Compile and maintain contemporaneous notes of all actions—adhering to:
- ACPO (Association of Chief Police Officers) Principles
- ISO 17025 standards
- FSR Codes of Practice

Maintain and demonstrate competency in ISO 17025-accredited processes within the DFU.

Mentor and support junior digital forensic technicians and other new staff members, including analysts, technicians, and administrative colleagues.

Conduct supervisory peer review/quality assurance on the work of other forensic analysts and technicians.

Follow the outlined career development plan for the role.

Provide technical support to officers viewing and grading recovered digital evidence.

Assist with search warrant execution, offering specialist guidance on securely seizing and handling digital devices.

Deliver presentations and briefings on digital forensic techniques, sharing practical advice and guidance with investigating officers.

Under senior guidance, research, test, and recommend new forensic tools or methods for implementation.

Support ISO accreditation tasks, including:
- Internal audits
- Method validation assistance

Contribute to digital forensic projects and training (e.g., mobile phone kiosk implementation, raising forensic awareness in other units).

Keep knowledge updated on evolving digital forensic procedures, ensuring up-to-date expertise.

Collaborate closely with other departments to promote knowledge sharing and assist in developing digital forensic examination strategies.

Undertake additional relevant tasks due to rapid technological advancements.
Emotional & Physical Resilience Requirements
Due to the distressing nature of DFU work (including exposure to child sexual abuse material), candidates must:
- Possess strong emotional resilience to manage distressing content regularly.
- Undergo regular compulsory Occupational Health & Wellbeing (OHU) assessments.
Skills & Experience
Core Requirements

Degree (QCF Level 6) or equivalent industry training in a relevant field.

Expertise in IT hardware/software, including:
- PC architecture, maintenance, connectivity, and configuration
- Awareness of ACPO guidelines, Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act (RIPA), and Criminal Procedure & Investigations Act

Strong understanding of:
- Digital forensic procedures and best practice
- Court-standards presentation skills

Familiarity with:
- Multiple operating systems (mobile, desktop)

Awareness of forensic hardware and software.

Understanding of certification/relevances of ISO 17025 on Digital Forensic Investigations.

Ability to maintain strict confidentiality.
Candidates should demonstrate the above skills and experiences in their application to progress to interview.

Eligibility
- Successful candidates must meet minimum security vetting standards:
- 5+ years of checkable history.
- Successful completion of Police vetting procedures (Management Vetting = MV).
