Digital Forensic Analyst

Role Summary

We are recruiting Digital Forensic Analysts to support police investigations by securing and retrieving evidence from digital devices in accordance with national guidelines. This role is ideal for analytical, detail-oriented professionals passionate about digital investigations based in Sheffield.

About the Role

Digital Forensic Analysts will provide specialist support to police investigations by extracting forensic evidence from digital devices, such as mobile phones and computers, ensuring compliance with DFU SOPs, ISO17025 Standards, and Forensic Science Regulator (FSR) Codes of Practice.

The role requires physical and emotional resilience due to the nature of the work, including regular exposure to distressing digital material (e.g., child sexual abuse content). Candidates must undergo mandatory occupational health and wellbeing (OHU) assessments.


Key Responsibilities

The role encompasses the following core duties:

  • Secure and retrieve digital evidence from a range of devices (e.g., phones, computers) following DFU SOPs, ISO17025, and FSR Codes of Practice, using industry-standard software and techniques.
  • Process and analyse recovered data in line with forensic guidelines for presentation in criminal proceedings.
  • Present complex forensic findings clearly to Investigating Officers, CPS, and Courts using accessible terminology.
  • Provide expert testimony in Court proceedings to support investigations.
  • Record detailed contemporaneous notes of all actions, adhering to ACPO Principles, ISO17025, and FSR Codes of Practice.
  • Maintain competency in accredited forensic processes and objectives under ISO17025.
  • Mentor and support technicians and newly appointed staff, including analysts and admin staff in forensic procedures.
  • Perform supervisory peer review of work produced by junior analysts and technicians for quality assurance.
  • Follow the career development plan outlined for the role.
  • Offer technical support to Officers during examinations (e.g., device viewing and file grading).
  • Assist Officers with search warrant execution, providing specialist advice on digital device seizure and recovery.
  • Deliver presentations, briefings, and training to investigators on digital forensic procedures.
  • Conduct industry research on new forensic techniques and products, recommending implementation where appropriate.
  • Support ISO 17025 accreditation via internal audits and method validation.
  • Engage in digital forensic projects and awareness training (e.g., mobile phone kiosk operations, team training).
  • Develop and maintain expertise in evolving digital forensic procedures.
  • Collaborate with other departments to improve inter-agency knowledge-sharing and forensic examination strategies.
  • Handle additional duties aligned with rapid technological changes.

Requirements

Qualifications & Experience

Candidates must demonstrate the following essential skills and experience:

  • A QCF Level 6 (degree) qualification in a relevant field or an equivalent industry certification.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of:
    • Hardware and software, including PC architecture, operating systems, connectivity and maintenance.
    • Forensic guidelines, legislation and practices, such as ACPO Principles, Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act, Criminal Procedure and Investigations Act, and Human Rights considerations.
    • Procedures and best practices for digital device examination.
  • Strong IT hardware and software awareness, particularly relating to forensic processes.
  • Experience working with forensic hardware and software, including advanced analytical tools.
  • An understanding of ISO Standards, particularly ISO 17025, and their role in digital forensic investigations.
  • Ability to work under scrutiny, maintain confidentiality, and adhere to high professional standards.
  • Aptitude for written and verbal communication, ensuring clarity when presenting findings to público investigators, courts, and colleagues.

Physical & Emotional Resilience

  • Capacity to work with distressing material, including child sexual abuse content, regularly.
  • Commitment to undergoing mandatory occupational health assessments throughout the employment period.

  • Management Vetting (MV) determination at the minimum level. Vetting may be graded up during employment.
