Dining Associate I - Caffeine Lab (part-time, CSULB student)

Dining Associate I

JOB SUMMARY

Under the direction of the operation’s leadership, the Dining Associate I is responsible for providing superior guest service. Tasks include greeting customers, collecting payment, preparing and assembling food and beverage orders, and safeguarding company, customer, and campus assets.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

(Other duties may be assigned)

  • Obtains assigned service stations from a supervisor at the start of the work shift
  • Greets customers, takes orders, collects payment, and makes change
  • Demonstrates knowledge of menu items, allergen information, and offerings
  • Follows California alcohol beverage control guidelines and campus regulations where alcohol is served
  • Adheres to established branded concept guidelines where applicable
  • Merchandises retail items in an aesthetically pleasing manner
    • Receives, verifies, sorts, and stocks supplies
  • Maintains cleanliness and sanitation of:
    • Front-of-house guest dining areas (e.g., bussing tables, cleaning food stations, emptying trash, resetting tables)
    • Back-of-house kitchen areas (e.g., restroom supplies, napkin dispensers, condiment stations, operating dishwashers, mopping)
  • Supports campus and company sustainability initiatives
  • Cross-trains and works in all areas of the operation as needed
  • Prepares and serves:
    • Coffee (drip/espresso drinks)
    • Tea and specialty beverages, depending on assigned station
  • Handles animal and vegetable proteins during various cooking stages
  • Complies with Health Department and OSHA regulations

CONDITIONS OF POSITION

Work Schedule

  • Assignments during CSULB Retail Dining operating hours (Monday–Sunday), including mornings, afternoons, evenings, and nights.
  • Hours follow the CSULB Academic Calendar, aligning with peak semester and reduced breaks.
  • Employee must be available for at least 12 hours per semester, though workload fluctuates based on activity.

Physical Demands

  • Frequently stands/walks in busy dining environments
  • Uses hands/fingers (e.g., handling plates, utensils, cutlery)
  • Lifts/moves items weighing 40–50 pounds
  • Requires bent arms/knees (stooping, reaching), stairs/climbing to relocate between locations
  • Subject to heat (kitchen), cold (refrigerator), and moderate/loud noise levels

Work Environment

  • Dining service and kitchen may have:
    • Confined spaces
    • Heavy traffic and high guest turnover
    • Extreme temperatures (humid/heat in kitchen, cold in freezers)
    • Noise levels ranging from "moderate" to "loud"
    • Exposures to hot surfaces, cutlery during standard operations
    • Chemicals used in cleaning/sanitation
  • Uniform Requirements:
    • Hairnet, approved apron, slip-resistant/non-slip shoes
    • Grooming standard enforced; employees must arrive prepared at scheduled time

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

(Representative requirements for education, training, skills, and abilities)

Education and Experience

  • Must be a current and active CSULB student enrolled in minimum 6 units

Certificates, Licenses, Registration

  • Required within 30 days of hire:
    • California Food Handler Card
    • Responsible Beverage Service (RBS) certification

Knowledge and Abilities

  • Confident in simple mathematics (cash handling, measurement)
  • Superior communication & customer service skills
  • Ability to follow written/verbal safety instructions
  • Compliance with University and Beach Shops policies/procedures
