Dining Room Assistant/Cook

Catering Team Member (Band 2) – 30 Hours Per Week (Mon-Fri) Fieldhead Hospital, Wakefield – South West Yorkshire Partnership NHS Trust

About the Role

We are seeking hardworking, enthusiastic individuals to join our Catering Team at Fieldhead Hospital. This role offers 30 hours per week (Monday–Friday), providing safe, nutritious, and exciting meal services to service users, staff, and visitors. You will prepare dishes using fresh ingredients, support functions/special events, and contribute to maintaining the dining room’s cleanliness and hygiene in line with NHS standards.

Key aspects of the role include:

  • Preparing and cooking high-quality meals to required standards
  • Participating in special events and catering functions (diverse and dynamic)
  • Ensuring strict adherence to food safety, hygiene, and healthcare environments
  • Assisting with cleanliness, clearing post-meal duties, and cash handling
  • Working collaboratively in a fast-paced team while prioritising tasks effectively

Staff uniform will be provided.


Main Responsibilities

Core Duties

  • Provide a safe, nutritious meal service to patients, staff, and visitors
  • Prepare meals using fresh ingredients to prescribed standards
  • Participate in functions, events, and working lunches, ensuring an excellent experience
  • Clean and maintain the dining room in compliance with NHS cleaning standards
  • Assist with cash handling, clear-up post-meal sanitation, and cash management
  • Work across multiple Trust sites when necessary to support wider catering operations
  • Develop personal skills to achieve departmental and team objectives

Key Performance Areas

  • Food Quality: Prepare meals adhering to Food Hygiene General Regulations 1995
  • Teamwork: Collaborate to enhance catering services and problem-solve
  • Flexibility: Assist in other departments or Trust locations at supervision discretion
  • Problem-Solving: Identify risks, execute corrective actions, and maintain standards
  • HACCP Compliance: Use and enhance knowledge of Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points (HACCP)
  • Event Coordination: Ensure efficiency for meetings, lunches, and functions

Selection Criteria (Person Specification)

** Personal Attributes (Essential)**

  • Flexible attitude towards working arrangements
  • Friendly and outgoing personality
  • Willingness to work in different locations LN

Physical Requirements

  • Sufficient fitness to perform all job demands
  • Satisfactory sick record over the past 2 years (considered fairly)

Knowledge & Skills (Critical)

  • Ability to work independently and with initiative
  • Organisational skills + prioritisation
  • Proficient in communication (colleagues, patients, Trust staff)
  • Practical working knowledge of HACCP

** Qualifications (Essential)**

  • NVQs 706/1 and 706/2, or equivalent
  • Level 3 Food Hygiene Certificate (or commitment to obtain)

Salary & Contract

  • Band 2 based on Agenda for Change (NHS pay scale)
  • Salary: £25,272 pro-rata per year
  • Contract is Permanent, Part-Time (Flexible working considered)
  • Location: Fieldhead Hospital, Wakefield, WF1 3SP
