About the Role

Do you want to work for the [Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO)] and play a key role in ensuring our country's safety through caring for the [Defence estate]—and those dependent on it? At the heart of this mission, DIO acts as the estate experts for the Defence community, supporting the armed forces by planning, building, maintaining, and servicing critical infrastructure.

With a team of around 4,900 professionals, DIO encompasses a diverse spectrum of professions—from head office roles to specialists such as Surveyors, Town Planners, Airfield Pavement Experts, Foresters, and Construction Engineers. This Civil Engineering Degree Apprenticeship operates on a 37-hour weekly work schedule.


Programme Overview

The DIO Apprenticeship Academy offers comprehensive apprenticeships, integrating practical work with rigorous training for immediate impact and long-term career growth. Degree Apprenticeship Partnership:

📚 The University of Warwick (UoW) partners with DIO to deliver the BEng (Hons) Civil and Infrastructure Engineering Degree Apprenticeship. This structured five-year programme combines:

Role Purpose:

Civil Engineers are essential professionals in shaping and maintaining infrastructural systems integral to societal and defence needs:

Impactful projects include roads, bridges, rail networks, buildings, airstrips, water systems, wholesale infrastructure, and other vital structures.

Key Responsibilities comprise:

💡 Technical Design: Application of fundamental engineering principles to achieve regulatory compliance and sustainability goals. 🧠 Critical Problem-Solving: Analyzing challenges in civil projects and devising cost-efficient, sustainable solutions. 📝 Project Management: Guiding projects from conceptualisation through design, delivery, and handover. 🆔 Coordination: Collaborating with Senior Civil Engineers, Architects, Project Managers, Facilities Experts, Contractors, and stakeholders across Defence organisations.

The five-year apprenticeship begins with Academic Induction at the University of Warwick (UoW), from December 2026, blending face-to-face residential sessions and virtual learning on a structured pathway along with on-the-job application.

Program Outputs:

Upon graduation, you will: 🔹 Earn a BEng (Hons) in Civil and Infrastructure Engineering. 🔹 Undertake registration as an Incorporated Engineer with a professional engineering institution. 🔹 Imposition support for fast pace careers in Defence infrastructure & broader civil engineering sectors.
