Job Summary

We are seeking a proactive and detail-oriented individual to support the Regional Technical Team (RTT) Assurance Head in driving technical excellence, safety compliance, governance, and professional standards across the organisation.

This is a key role in managing and improving the safety and learning framework, ensuring the effective monitoring, publication, and closure of Safety Alerts, whilst supporting the development and delivery of the RTT Safety and Learning Programme.

Ensuring Technical governance processes are updated, and aligned with DIO Centre of Excellence (CoE) and Technical Services guidance. Identifying technical works resulting from Safety Alerts (SA), Technical Bulletins, Technical publications, and creating tasks requiring funding and/or risk assurance management.

The role also includes monitoring assurance activity and associated actions, tracking lessons identified and lessons learned, and providing clear reporting on progress and outcomes.

The post holder will maintain and develop RTT SharePoint resources, ensuring technical information remains accurate, current, and aligned with governance requirements. Working collaboratively with stakeholders, utilising feedback and insight to identify opportunities for continuous improvement, helping to strengthen processes, consistency, and service delivery across the team.

This is an excellent opportunity for an individual with strong governance, assurance, communication, and organisational skills who is passionate about driving continuous improvement and maintaining high technical and safety standards.

The post advertised is for 37 hours net, however, the Ministry of Defence offers a range of flexibilities to enable a better work-life balance for employees. Flexible working patterns will be considered.

The objectives of the role cannot be delivered within reduced hours or through job share, it entails management of a high volume of complex outputs which require a consistent and rapid turnaround for resolutions for safe and legal compliance and potential risk to lives. It includes but is not limited to remote management over a wide geographical area and challenging stakeholder management with diverse customers that require access to a single point of contact full-time.

A full UK driving licence is required as the Region is geographically dispersed, and the successful candidate will be site-based with a requirement to travel to various locations to fulfil the role successfully and effectively, including occasional travel across the SW region and national travel. Please note Public Transport is not available to many of our locations.

Job Description

You will act as one of the region's senior technical advisers providing strategic oversight, technical assurance, and leadership across maintenance, compliance, and infrastructure projects.

You will influence decisions across a diverse estate, engaging with senior military, civilian, and industry stakeholders, in a role supporting the delivery of Defence Infrastructure Services' contracts for maintenance services and new construction projects on the Defence Estate.

You will have the opportunity to:

  • Influence engineering strategy across a diverse £multi-billion Defence estate.
  • Deliver Net Zero and sustainability initiatives including solar, EV charging, and low-carbon heating projects.
  • Support major infrastructure investments across airfields, fuel installations, accommodation, and training facilities.
  • Work with industry-leading suppliers, consultants, and government stakeholders.
  • Play a key role in ensuring the safety and resilience of critical Defence infrastructure.

A key member of the Regional Technical Team (RTT) providing first-hand support on a wide range of technical specialisms to the Site Teams and wider DIO, being agile identifying and implementing solutions.

We have a Safety-First Ethos focusing on assuring safety standards in key areas such as, Asbestos, Gas Safety, Electrical, Fire Safety, Fuels, Legionella, and DSEAR Management. The role will involve planned and preventative maintenance, project management, contract management, collaboration with customers, suppliers, and consultancies to deliver a safe place for service personnel to work, live, and train. DIO is investing in strategic asset management, and you could be part of the future management of the Defence Estate.

Proactively managing work tasks through clear and effective direction; supporting and participating in a culture of continuous improvement.

Providing support to maintain all DIO Business as Usual Operational Requirements & respond effectively to assist management requests to support changing departmental priorities.

Encouraging a working culture which promotes a healthy, safe, and inclusive environment. Prioritising people's development and supporting smart ways of working. Building strong collaborative, professional working relationships with colleagues and other teams across DIO & the wider MOD, to provide the continued level of support needed across a diverse estate in support of Defence.

Travel between sites to review works, promote effective stakeholder relationships, collaboration, training, and development; spending 60% of your time working from your permanent duty station, or other site location.

Person specification

We are looking for an experienced professional with a strong background in estate, facilities, or infrastructure management who thrives in a governance and assurance environment. The successful candidate will demonstrate the ability to translate policy and technical requirements into practical business outcomes, whilst building effective relationships across a wide stakeholder network.

You will be comfortable working independently, analysing complex information, identifying risks and opportunities, and driving continuous improvement.

Experience of governance, assurance, compliance, or performance management frameworks will be advantageous, alongside a commitment to delivering excellent customer service and supporting Defence outputs.

Safety & Risk Management:

  • Supporting the Technical Team investigating safety alerts and notices within the region.
  • Identifying safety-related risks and collaborating proactively with other partners in the identification, mitigation, and closure of risks.

Technical Support:

  • Undertaking compliance reviews for contracted works, including planned and reactive maintenance, reporting findings and making recommendations for statutory and mandatory compliance as well as operational capability.
  • Working with our Strategic Compliance Team in planning, undertaking, and reporting on programmed and reactive assurance checks, including learning from experience and continuous improvement.
  • Providing technical guidance and support to Site Teams on all related safety alerts.
  • Contributing to a strong ethos of team development and continuous improvement through personal development and mentoring.

Essential qualifications:

  • BTEC/ SQAHNVQ or SCOTVEC HNC/ HND together with substantial relevant & recent experience in a construction, infrastructure, or engineering-related discipline.

Desirable Skills & Experience:

  • Experience within Defence, government estates, or other highly regulated environment.
